Good Morning! St. Augustine by Nancy Oliphant Late have I loved you, O Beauty so ancient, and so new. Late have I loved you! You were within me but I was outside myself, and there I sought you! In my weakness I ran after the beauty of the things you have made — the things which would have no being unless they existed in you! You have called, you have cried, and you have pierced my deafness. You have radiated... Read more

St. Monica by John Nava, cribbed from the Deac Today is the Feast Day of St. Monica, the mother of St. Augustine who prayed for years and years that he would accept Jesus Christ and enter the church – which he finally did, and in a big way, because Augustine did everything big. If it seems like you’re hearing Augustine’s name a lot, lately, it may be because Nancy Pelosi has been throwing it around as she uses his musings... Read more

Wait, that can’t be right. Nancy Pelosi cannot have respond to the rather heavy dose of correction she received from various and sundry Bishops and Cardinals, some of her colleagues in Congress and the US Conference of Catholic Bishops with an offer to drill their brains, right? Oh, wait! I see! She asked some of the “Drill here, drill now” people chanting in Colorado if she could drill their brains. Which seems like a strange remark – what does it... Read more

Long, stressed out days call for a bit of chant. If you’d like to pray Compline with me, do so here. If you have the Christian Prayer breviary, it begins on page 1044. O God, come to my assistance, O Lord, make haste to help me. Glory to the Father. and to the son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever, Amen. Psalmody Antiphon: Do not hide your face from... Read more

Oh, and Kill Michelle Malkin!. [Update: Gateway Pundit has a much better (and funner) video here!] When I was ten, I wondered about the people who ran around in blue jeans and bare feet, preaching “peace and love” while calling cops “pigs”, calling their parents “bourgeouis” and labeling anyone who disagreed with their style as “clydes,” or “fags” (back then – at least in my neighborhood – you didn’t have to be gay to be called a “fag;” a “fag”... Read more

There is so much “convention related” stuff out there, and much of it is rehashed from site-to-site, that when someone writes something both exceptionally clever and insightful, you just have to move it to the front of the line. Patrick O’ Hannigan is hitting on all cylinders with hot rod of a piece, playing the musical “Grease” off the Democrat convention: With poll data showing John McCain virtually tied with Barack Obama, the latter’s handlers now realize the folly of... Read more

I was just out driving, had the radio on and heard this Meet the Press sound bite by Nancy Pelosi, on Limbaugh’s show: REP. PELOSI: I would say that as an ardent, practicing Catholic, this is an issue that I have studied for a long time. And what I know is, over the centuries, the doctors of the church have not been able to make that definition. And Senator–St. Augustine said at three months. We don’t know. The point is,... Read more

We dropped Buster off at school on Saturday – felt rather badly for him; his usual roomie – a close friend – will be out for a semester having surgery, and while the new guy seems chill, I think it suddenly struck him, full force, that he’d be missing his friend. Otherwise it was interesting to watch him become happier and more excited as we drove into “his” neighborhood. I think all-in-all he’s glad to be back at school. I... Read more

This is just a wonderful blog post – a Jewish man attending a “Jewish bloggers” conference in the Holy Land goes to wash his hands, and learns a moral lesson that will speak to all of us. It’s hard to excerpt and do it justice. Just go, read. Thanks, Shana. Still on the road – comments in moderation will be released on Monday! Read more

When I wrote about the latest gangs of postulants, novices and vowed religious, I told you I would be following up with more news on various communities. The Dominicans are – as usual – going gangbusters, these days. The Nashville Dominicans invested 6 new novices with the habit, had 12 novices make their first profession of vows, and received the final professions of 11 sisters. They will be welcoming 18 new postulants to the house in a few weeks. Pictures... Read more
