Excerpt from God and the World; A Conversation between Peter Seewald and Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. Seewald: Is faith, in principle, always present in man? Ratzinger: So far as we can learn about the history of mankind, through excavations right back into prehistory, we can see that there has always been an idea of God. The Marxists had professed the end of religion. With the end of oppression we would no longer need the medicine of God, we were told. But... Read more

From Deacon Greg, from whom I shamelessly crib the photo. “St. Bernard and German Shepherd” (from PackerBronco) And Buster in a Fez, about a million years ago. Why? Because he calls me from school at 2AM (he knows I’m reacquainting with my old friend, insomnia) and announces, among other things, that he is walking the campus enjoying a cigar, and wearing an anti-Che tee shirt and a fez. “Where’d you get the fez?” I asked. “A friend was wearing it... Read more

There is a a lovely post up over at the Inside Catholic blog, wherein Zoe Romanowsky links to Fr. Hugh Vincent Dyer, OP (is it me or is the Dominican Order absolutely all over the internet and using it very well, indeed?), and his encounter with a Muslim woman that might surprise you. One day last week I stood in front of St. Stephen Martyr Church in D.C. with a young religious sister and the pastor of the parish. The... Read more

Here is an interesting thought, but I must confess it comes not from me, but from a reader, Diane S, who reminded me of this piece (which I am reposting here) and wondered whether Jeremiah Wright, “in the thick of a white-hot media spotlight” is falling prey to the same destructive disease of ego expansion that has struck and deranged others. I think perhaps Wright is not under the same spell. I have no doubt that he is enjoying the... Read more

You’ll note the ad for VISION Vocation Match at the right sidebar. They were recently profiled on CBS Evening News (you have to go here and press the “Featured on CBS News” button) as part of a story on late vocations to the priesthood, and on how the church in America is hopeful that the visit of Pope Benedict XVI will help inspire more people to consider the priesthood or religious life. That is not a completely silly hope. If... Read more

There are so many illnesses, so many doctors, so many specialised treatments – and then there’s me, the priest. I carry a little bag on my shoulder with Holy Oils, Holy Water, Holy Cards and, of course, the Blessed Sacrament. Nothing beeps or flashes. I go to each patient, one after the other, and only ever find one illness and only ever offer one cure. I love this post. Read more

You know, I’ve been – inarguably – one of President Bush’s staunchest supporters through some pre-tty rough days, and I’m really, really glad to see Ed Morrissey post this video and add his typically well-reasoned commentary. But I just want to know – and with all due respect – where the HELL has this version of President Bush been for…oh…the last couple years??????? Go check out the video and Ed’s comments. But come back and read this piece by Jay... Read more

I wasn’t going to write about this because – while I know it gets a lot of Catholic blood running – I can’t get that excited about it. SOME CLARIFICATION FOR THOSE WILLFULLY MISREADING ME: That does not mean I do not CARE about the issue. It simply means that I think we’ve all managed at times to insult and offend the Lord in various ways, and sometimes Eucharistically, and so I prefer to leave the scolding to the ones... Read more

AJ Strata has an interesting link up over at his site – one that, if the thing pans out – suggests that it was a Clinton operative who invited Jeremiah Wright to (disastrously) address the National Press Club. AJ wonders if Wright has been bought off by the “old school” black democrats – paid to essentially destroy Obama’s campaign – and what the price was. I initially did not believe that. I thought of Wright as a simple exhibitionist unable... Read more

Q: Anchoress, if someone tells you that you cannot be credibly pro-life until you adopt a sick baby, and then you go out and adopt a sick baby (and then a second) and that person – who promised to become “pro-life” if you did it – never kept his end of the bargain, what does that mean? A: It means you can’t form a conscience in fits and starts. You cannot become “pro-life” because of what someone else does, unless... Read more
