(link) While all the runners in the stadium take part in the race, the award goes to one man. In that case, run so as to win! Athletes deny themselves all sorts of things. They do this to win a crown of leaves that withers, but we a crown that is imperishable. I do not run like a man who loses sight of the finish line. I do not fight as if I were shadowboxing. What I do is discipline... Read more

Why Catholics Sit, Kneel, Bow and Stand Thankfully, this year Lent has not completely gotten away from me as it did, last year. For that I credit the help of my Breviary – (psalmody is so very powerful and grounding, when we commit to it) and Anthony Bloom’s Beginning to Pray, and also the Gospels, which I have been reading chapter-by-chapter each night with a notebook and a bit more care than usual. Just now, I’m liking the Ignatius Bible,... Read more

2008 Catholic Blog Awards are now taking nominations. I’m not clear on the changes this year…I think there will only be one chance to vote once the nominees are named. Check it out and nominate your faves! Barbara Nicolosi of Church of the Masses has founded a program to prepare Christians for Hollywood careers. Writes Barbara: The program takes place in the heart of the Hollywood entertainment industry with intensive classroom instruction and mentoring from a world-class faculty of over... Read more

Over at Inside Catholic Margaret Cabaniss has embedded a great clip from the Colbert Report – Stephen Colbert going mano a mano – and very impressively – in a debate on the origins of good and evil, and the need for authority. You’ll enjoy, even with the bleep at the end! Related: Who Told You That You Were Naked? Read more

[Vizzini has just cut the rope The Dread Pirate Roberts is climbing up] Vizzini: HE DIDN’T FALL? INCONCEIVABLE. Inigo Montoya: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. — The Princess Bride Keith Olbermann is increasingly reminding me of Vizzini the Sicilian in The Princess Bride, who declares every event he does not foresee as “inconceivable.” In Olbermann’s case, he seems to be misusing (or misunderstanding) the meaning of the word “fascist.”... Read more

Expulsion from Paradise* H/T Reader Anthony The woman saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves. … Then... Read more

It seems Bill is still not really helping the Hillary Campaign. Got an email from a reader directing me to Striken Fancy, who had linked to The Agitator who wonders if Bill Clinton is deliberately trying to sink Hillary? I thought at the time that Bill Clinton’s comments comparing Obama to Jesse Jackson were tacky and self-defeating, but I hadn’t really given them much more thought than that. But this guy made some interesting points.Bill Clinton has mastered southern politics... Read more

I do. I periodically bless the rooms, doors and windows with holy water. When my kids were small I would bless them with it before they went out to school, or if they were sick. We have a holy water font by the front door – do you? It is – frankly – often dry. Perhaps for the rest of Lent I will try to use it more frequently, to instill that habit, and get my husband to, too. This... Read more
