My Li’l Bro Thom sent this video writing: I was in tears. A stunning and brilliant idea…the way the names keep going and going and going…and then it drops. Like I said: tears. I watched it and had the same reaction – the moment when the screen listing the names of our 9/11 dead collapses is reminiscent of the towers going down, and it’s like a punch to the gut. Terrible and beautiful and I wondered, “how could I have... Read more

Impressions quickly because I’m busy doing paying work: 1)Sad that Rudy conked out – and I should have listened to my gut and held off on the donation. 2)McCain has McMentum but I ain’t excited. Can’t say Mitt excites me either, so I am still officially undecided and unexcited. For now, it’s stretching and belly-scratching time. What’s on the old movie channel? 3)Unless Super Tuesday swings dramatically to Obama, Hillary is the Dem nominee; she’s got the super-delegates, and I... Read more

A few days ago I reviewed this book and highly recommended it. Julie at Happy Catholic did, too, and you know you can trust her! I wrote: Do yourself a favor, particularly if – in this bleak mid-winter full of election noise and bloviation – you feel the need to be refreshed and uplifted, and pick up this book. It will have something to say to you. The author, Elizabeth Ficocelli will talk about the book with Father Benedict Groeschel’s... Read more

A little trip down memory lane on this election day: Watch him – in a foreign and hostile land – go rescue the Secret Service agent who was being detained and kept from protecting him. See him shoot his cuffs, afterwards, and greet his host. I don’t care what anyone says – Bush is one cool customer; This guy is due some serious appreciation, even if you feel “betrayed” by him. Name the president who got it all right, all... Read more

Shrug. Okay. Durable goods are 5.2%. Orders to factories for big-ticket manufactured goods soared in December by the largest amount in five months, welcome news for an economy buffeted by talk of recession. The 5.2 percent increase in orders was a surprise finish for the manufacturing sector at year’s end — a segment of the economy considered to have had a poor year. The increase in orders, as reported Tuesday by the Commerce Department, was far larger than had been... Read more

A new Benedictine novice, Sr. Marie-Therese writes about her clothing this week at Colwich Abbey, UK: I was Clothed at 8.15 am on Friday 25th January in our Chapter room with Mother Abbess presiding, i was at a prayer stool in the middle and the community were around us. Mother said ’sister, what do you ask?’ and i replied – ‘the mercy of God, the grace to share your monastic life and to begin my novitiate in this monastery of... Read more

I wasn’t going to write at all about the SOTU address; I never do because so many others do a better job. But I’ve had a few emails asking my impressions, so – 1) Hillary always look like a snotty college sophomore at these events. What a smug, know-it-all sourpuss she is. 2) I believe President Bush says “nucular” just to piss them off. I think Charlie Rangel knows it too, he laughed when Bush pushed “nucular” power. We need... Read more

This sounds like a winner – an America opera based on Sinclair Lewis’ classic novel, Elmer Gantry: …the public unveiling of their “Elmer Gantry,” produced by Nashville Opera along with the Peak Performances series at Montclair State University in New Jersey, had gone off beautifully, complete with ovations, Champagne toasts and excellent reviews. (“ ‘Elmer Gantry’ stirs soul, provokes thought” was the headline in that morning’s Tennessean.) The fledgling work even had legs, if short ones. After two more Nashville... Read more
