NOTE: No, I have no idea what has happened to my header and all of my pictures. Inquiries to photobucket are not yet answered. One second I had pictures, the next, I did not. Is anyone else having problems with photobucket? IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE BOOKSHELF – Go here. The US knew about AlQ in the 1990’s? How come everything in this country can get leaked except the redacted portions of this report? This is good to hang... Read more

Chris Muir has the masterful cartoon on the subject. I wonder just who convinced the DPW to back off? Lots of face saving going on…LOTS of it. Meanwhile – too late – here’s another consideration in support of the deal. DPW: A hand poorly played by everyone. Read more

The DPW deal is dead. Now, the DPW is saying it will hand over control of the ports to a US entity. If I remember right, this was the solution Big Lizard offered a while back. Hmph. This is probably a smart move, but I cannot believe how poorly played every aspect of this deal has been – and I am not convinced that DPW’s move will assuage the fears and tempers of some out there. I am also not... Read more

I posted yesterday about the release of Richard Lawrence Cohen’s latest book, and am still enjoying it very much. With his permission, I’m posting this piece I particularly liked. Flocking Behavior Think of your mind not as a single entity but as a flock: a flock of birds. They move together spontaneously, clustered tightly without any physical connection, transmitting signals in a flash of wing, a tip of beak. The flock rises on a curve, slanting over a road or... Read more

At the urging of Julie, who has way more influence over me than is probably healthy, I have thought about it and conceded that I am, in fact, quite the Amateur Catholic. As such, I get to put that blue button thingy in my sidebar (scroll down) and I get to figuratively kneel before you in something resembling a cyber-Chapter of Faults and tell you why I am now, and will likely forever be, an Amateur. I am an amateur... Read more

My Chapel Hill source, “A” has forwarded a remarkable piece by Ginny Franks, a weekly columnist for the Daily Tarheel. “A” is sure Ms. Franks will be taken to the woodshed for daring to write the piece, and that she will probably be dismissed. If so, that would be very unjust in our “free” society. But she’s certainly on fire and speaking freely, here: Terrorists are evil, but they aren’t cowards. The truth is that terrorists aim to make cowards... Read more

I see, thanks to Michelle Malkin that conservative women are officially fighting back in addressing The Vagina Monologues. Well…have at it, if you must, ladies, and God’s best to you. But I’m convinced that to address that play or Eve Ensler with anything approximating seriousness and deliberation is to give the whole Vagina Endeavor a patina of credibility and seriousness it simply does not deserve. Eve Ensler’s foul-mouthed, talking, raspberry-blowing,”goodraping,” hiccupping, whining, slobbering, sloppy drunken vagina of a play really,... Read more

One of the two or three streaks of light on our horizon can be perceived in this: that the moral breakdown of these papers has been accompanied by a mental breakdown also. The contemporary official paper, like the “DailyNews” or the “Daily Chronicle” (I mean in so far as it deals with politics), simply cannot argue; and simply does not pretend to argue. It considers the solution which it imagines that wealthy people want, and it signifies the same in... Read more

You are an Iris: You are logical, analytical, dignified, and wise. You are studious by nature and may prefer books to people. You tend to be a serious person but are capable of making others laugh with your dry sense of humor. Friends always benefit from your advice. Symbolism: Over the centuries the iris has come to symbolize faith, wisdom, hope, and promise in love. Which Flower are You? brought to you by Quizilla Well, alright, then. I knew I... Read more

It’s one thing to be a blogger who has written a book, like Glenn Reynolds and his impressive, ever-more-popular An Army of Davids…it’s something else to be a writer who has written a blog which has become, in a manner of speaking, a book. That’s what Richard Lawrence Cohen has done in this newly released collection of his “originally blogged” short stories, haiku, vignettes and fables, entitled Only What Is I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy and... Read more
