I mentioned in the post below that some who oppose the UAE/ports deal are not taking kindly to any suggestion that their principled stands might be rooted in “Islamophobia.” And I don’t blame them for being annoyed by it, because as soon as people start throwing around such words, as soon as they start minimizing someone’s opinion by labeling it as “racist” or “Islamophobic” they’ve signalled that they are not listening. And it’s disrespectful, too. But I am wondering if... Read more

I’m more and more coming down on the side that this deal should happen. I actually wrote a lengthy piece about this port take-over and why I think it should happen – but I’ve decided to actually try to sell it and make some money, so you’ll have to wait to read it! Suffice to say, I’m reading enough now to realize that yes, the UAE are our allies, yes, they’ve been supportive and helpful to our troops and our... Read more

As I noted here, Michelle Malkin’s site was attacked yesterday and down for most of the day. She is clearly under fire for taking strong stands for free speech and against tyranny, and for showing steely resolve. While the Boston Globe is Didn’t work, though. Girlfriend called the FBI and her Tech support folks and she’s back at it today. I hear that old Tom Petty song playing in the background: I Won’t Back Down! She sounds cheeful, resolute and... Read more

I love this idea: The regulars are seated at the bar at Pat Troy’s Ireland’s Own, a restaurant in Old Town where the beer and the conversation are flowing. […] Baseball caps are slipped off as patrons, most of them young men, make the sign of the cross and bow their heads while Hanley recites the Prayer to the Holy Spirit. Hanley will continue like this for more than a half-hour, lecturing about duty, sainthood and the importance of daily... Read more

I have no idea how I stumbled into Ancient and Future Catholic Musings but I liked where it lead. I particularly like this bit of early church writing which I had never seen before. I want to recommend a great early Christian writing: The Epistle to Diognetus. It is a beautiful letter written by an unknown early Christian somewhere between the late first century and the mid second century. They [Christians] dwell in their own countries, but only as sojourners;... Read more

Someone emailed over this interesting interview with Bruce Bawer on his book, Stealing Jesus; How Fundamentalism Betrays Christianity. I have not read the book, although I might be tempted to buy it, but just from the interview, I think I might be disappointed. Bawer’s point seems to be that Fundamentalist Christians are nothing more than Pharisees concerned only with what he calls “The Church of the Law”, and not with the “Church of Love”. To illustrate his point, he brings... Read more

Sigmund has a very interesting post, here on dhimmitude, free speech, the press and what it all really meant when a Norwegian editor apologized to the Muslim world and Sweden went even further. Actually, in reading this, you even get a sense of what it FELT like, when these things occured. It felt creepy. It feels creepy to read, too, but read it you must. It is hard to excerpt, but I will, to tempt you: “…on February 10, in... Read more

My eclectic son – a big fan of the great Bill Withers – is listening to this, and loving it: He wants me to tell you that if you have forgotten Bill Withers, you should please do yourself a favor and remember him and his great music, because it is “extremely great R&B that should not be forgotten – he was such a fantastic vocalist with such outstanding phrasing.” I can’t say I disagree with him. I’m considering allowing Buster... Read more

Not all of them, of course, but The Curt Jester has a look at the blogs who won this year’s Catholic Blog Awards, and typically he has lovely comments about everyone. If you have not had a chance yet, please take a moment and check out the complete list of nominees. You might find a great blog or two you never saw before – I know I have!
