Glenn Reynolds (that would be the Instapundit if you don’t know) has a nice column up at TCS Daily wherein he looks at the profitability of blogging. Making money off a blog requires a lot of traffic, and no matter how much the blogosphere grows, most blogs won’t have a lot of traffic, as Clay Shirky persuasively demonstrated a while back. LaShawn Barber takes off from Glenn’s lead: I always tell potential bloggers not to go into political blogging seeking... Read more

Conservative Yankee, acknowledging that the Vice President seems somewhat in shock over the birdshot shooting of his friend Mr. Whittington, feels that something is missing from this story and spends some serious time thinking about it and even drawing graphs. You’ll find it interesting. Read more

I like this column by Dr. Thomas Sowell today: The media love to wrap themselves in the mantle of “the public’s right to know” but there is no such dedication to that right when it goes against the journalists’ own prejudices. The public’s right to know what a “partial birth abortion” is has been consistently disregarded for years by whole networks, even when they have given wide coverage to abortion controversies. Whatever your position on abortions, you need to know... Read more

Somehow, in all my reading, these awards had escaped me, but I see that not only is yours truly nominated in the “political blog category,” but lots of our regularly-linked-to pals are up for awards, too, including Julie at Happy Catholic, Gerald at Closed Cafeteria, Fr. Jim Tucker at Dappled Things, Southern Appeal, Amy Welborn, Pontifications, Donegal, the satirical Catholic News, the Curt Jester, and the good Dominican gals at Moniales. If you have a moment, please stop over and... Read more

This Valentine’s Day – for no reason I can discern, I am pointing you toward The Maternal Optimist who shares Our Lady’s Answer to Infertility. Speaking of Valentine’s – An Iraqi Mayor thanks US Troops, which you will not hear on David Gregory’s or Terry Moran’s news programs: I have met many soldiers of the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment; they are not only courageous men and women, but avenging angels sent by The God Himself to fight the evil of... Read more

And they can both be found at Ed Morrissey’s place. The first – the tale of the traveling Imams – Morrissey reprints a translation of a Danish editorial that spells out how ginned up and organized was the 5-month delayed “outrage” over so-called “offensive cartoons.” Outrage came after co-ordination. Second – the tale of the backpedaling Dems who came by their NSA outrage very late – having been repeatedly and regularly about the program. Outrage only came after co-ordination. Read... Read more

One of the most moving parts of past Olympic broadcasts, and the most enjoyable to me (even back when I was a liberal Democrat) was watching some American Gold Medalist receive his or her medal and the playing of the national anthem. I assume such things are still going on in Torino, but you wouldn’t know it from NBC’s coverage. Last night, we watched and noticed that at the end of the program…well, we saw the last 13 notes of... Read more

I hope not but I fear perhaps this article is right. At the very least, concern for good penmanship is out the window. My kids have deplorable handwriting and I tried, I really did. Elder Brother had 4 years of Catholic school but his handwriting is chickenscratch. Buster, coming up in a public school, where “penmanship” is considered an unimportant subject that makes children “feel bad about themselves” is simply illegible. I have no idea how his SAT essay even... Read more

Apparently God has spoken on the issue of these cartoons. Via the skinfolds of a newborn calf. Honestly, it sounds like something out of South Park. Read more

AJ Strata thinks so, as does Stop the ACLU. At the same time, the Republican chairmen of the Senate and House intelligence committees — Sen. Pat Roberts (Kan.) and Rep. Peter Hoekstra (Mich.), who attended secret National Security Agency briefings — said they supported Bush’s right to undertake the program without new congressional authorization. They added that Democrats briefed on the program, who included Harman and Daschle, could have taken steps if they believed the program was illegal. All four... Read more
