Please read neo-neocon’s latest entry in her multi-part series wherein she discusses how she moved politically from left to right. It is a journey many of us have made, and so there is lots to relate to, here. It’s a must read. “…I can’t totally explain it. But I know that part of the answer is that I had not read many publications on the other side in order to compare. Nor had I read many original sources such as... Read more

One of my all-time favorite note-cards – finally found it online, here. Icon written by Jan Isham Kind of a neat site for Orthodox stuff. Although I have always liked this monastery and this site, too, particularly for Icons. Conception Abbey, too. This book looks kinda interesting, too! Maybe I should create a “shopping” category! Read more

UPDATE: Vanderleun at American Digest has what is probably the final word on Stein. It’s very good writing, very perceptive. And a little worrisome. If you’re like me, you’ve seen about a million blogposts about Joel Stein’s Warriors and Wusses column – so many that you haven’t been able to read them all or keep them straight. I could lie and say I’m grouping them together here, for your convenience. The sad truth is, I’m also doing it for me,... Read more

Now, now, it’s not what it sounds like. It’s just that Julie at Happy Catholic is a good reader and she has given the big thumbs up to an out-of-print book that the world could probably stand to see back on the bookshelves, Leo Rosten’s People I Have Loved, Known or Admired. Julie excerpts: It is a pleasure for me to salute [this] benefactor of our inhuman race: J. Irwin Miller, chairman of the board of Cummins Engine Company, whom... Read more

UPDATE: Dr. Sanity has posted Part II of her exposition. You’ll want to read it. A while back, CBS’s Dick Meyer wrote a thoughtful piece on politics and paranoia, and this blog commented on it, and extended the line of thought into the effect of community on politics and paranoia, and vice versa. Today Dr. Sanity has a long and noteworthy piece on The Political Paranoia of the Left that cites the same 1963 Richard Hofstadter essay which had also... Read more

Drudge gives the heads up on it and it’s a good thing because even Googling the story doesn’t make it easy to find: CNNGALLUP SHOCK POLL: ONLY 16% FIRM ON HILLARY FOR PRESIDENT Wed Jan 25 2006 10:50:26 ET Most voters now say there’s no way they’d vote for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton if she runs for president in 2008 – while just 16 percent are firmly in her camp, a stunning new poll shows. CNN -GALLUP found that 51... Read more

Passed to me from a very reliable friend, appears there is a new virus out there with an email header purporting to contain pictures of Osama hanging by the neck. The body of the email says Osama is found, and instructs you to open the attachment to view the pics. Do that and munch, munch, munch, your hard drive is a goner. Just so you know. Read more

Benedict XVI’s first encyclical, which we talked about talked about last week, is called Deus Caritas Est – God is Love – and it is released today. In a world where the name of God is sometimes associated with vengeance or even a duty of hatred and violence, this message is both timely and significant. For this reason, I wish in my first Encyclical to speak of the love which God lavishes upon us and which we in turn must... Read more
