I’m sure this piece by Jack Kelly has been heavily linked to, today – but it can’t be linked to too much. I write this column a week and a day after the main levee protecting New Orleans breached. In the course of that week: More than 32,000 people have been rescued, many plucked from rooftops by Coast Guard helicopters. The Army Corps of Engineers has all but repaired the breaches and begun pumping water out of New Orleans. Shelter,... Read more

Hamlet You scored 9 evilness, 45 romance, 54 tragic, and 27 comic! Philosophical procrastinator, Hamlet is among the greatest tragic characters ever created. In dispair over his father’s murder and his mother’s marriage to his uncle, Hamlet discovers that his new stepfather and uncle is his father’s killer. But Hamlet thinks about revenge too long, which costs him his life. My test tracked 4 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender: You scored higher than 99%... Read more

I’ve been quiet most of the weekend due to matters of family health – it seems many members of my family have “health related” issues that are either diagnosed (my FIL’s stroke) or as-yet-unknown (my elder son and me). I’m not getting into details – my elder son is very private and would not appreciate it. Suffice to say, if you could whisper up a prayer or two for “J” as we head to doctors and tests tomorrow, I would... Read more

One of my doc’s sons is serving in Fallujah right now, and he confirms all of this sort of news as written by Michael Fumento: “The city is slowly rebuilding and returning to life. Some report that it’s now the safest city in the Sunni Triangle due to the heavy presence of Iraqi police and army. Every major intersection now has unarmed Iraqi police directing traffic in crisp short-sleeve button down shirts, white gloves, black flack vests, and dark blue... Read more

(my translation:) Pope Benedict XVI asked for more liberty for the Catholic Church in Venezuela so that the current strains in relations between the government of Hugo Chávez and the ecclesiastical authorities “would dissipate”. Fausta asks:... Read more

Had the MRI this afternoon – not good. Because I have so many twitchy things going on with my legs and arms I kept fearing I was moving and ruining the shots of my brain. Then they had to inject a contrast dye which meant a) three sticks before they could find a co-operative vein (as usual) and b) the dye made me nauseous and headachy because that’s what it does to folks with my blood disorder. Hello…came outta that... Read more

Real quick because I have a loaded-up day that starts with carting Buster around, then an MRI, then I’m putting together a birthday party for elderson’s g/f (she wants Lasagna! Lasagna!) and then more stuff is going on – but I wanted to point out three pieces focusing on soldiers, today, mostly because you probably won’t see or hear much about them in the MSM: 1)The Recruitment numbers are better than the press would have us believe. One of the... Read more

As though there ain’t enough in the world to worry about, SCA spells out some ugly projections. The bird flu mortality rate of 50 percent is the highest of any influenza virus in history. Indiana’s best-case scenario is a 15 percent “attack rate,” meaning about 15 percent of the population would be infected with avian influenza, said Dr. Charlene Graves, medical director of the Indiana State Department of Health immunization program and co-chair of the Pandemic Influenza Plan committee. But... Read more

Michelle Malkin and Brian Maloney have more on Air America and its questionable financing – it seems that AA was “questionably financed” right from the start. This part of their joint investigation is up at Michelle’s, and is a look at The Drobny Files; you’ll find it very interesting. RadioEqualizer has more. Michelle mentions in another area of her blog that if Blog “Pulitzers” existed, this report by Michael Yon would be a winner. Yes. But honestly, the work she... Read more

Captain Ed, who has done much of the heavy lifting in following all the strange shifts and branches contained in the Able Danger story, writes that the Senate Judiciary Committee is now going to begin looking into things. I thought it was kinda odd that the Judiciary Committee is the one looking into it. But Ed, while thinking it extraordinary, does think it makes sense: Not only is this news overdue, the use of the Judiciary Committee seems rather extraordinary.... Read more
