I’ve always thought LaShawn Barber does her best writing when she is riled up, as she is here, riffing from a David Gelernter column on affirmative action. I can say with 99.9 percent certainty that those who endured billy club beatings, lynchings, firehose spray, and dog bites didn’t do it so that one day their children and grandchildren could be deemed pitiable, too inferior for equal treatment, and too dumb to strive for the American dream on their own merits.... Read more

Ouch! OUCH! Erin at the bearing blog has just taken a little finger and inserted it into one of the greatest sore points of my life, as she responds to the question: “Why would a young woman spend three or four years to get a specialized degree that she won’t ever be using?” In other words, is education wasted on the at-home mother? Full disclosure: due to a matter of tyranny, the women in my birth family were not permitted... Read more

You guys know how much I hate rattling the tin cup – I hate it hugely and would much rather shake it for expensive blogs like Political Teen and Jackson’s Junction who do all that heavy video-lifting, and need lots of contributions. But I find I do have to stand here, for the next few days, and very shyly and reluctantly hold out my tin cup for any spare change you might be able to throw at me as you... Read more

Oh, this is excellent news, via Closed Cafeteria. The working paper of the next Synod of Bishops suggests that “songs used at present” in the liturgy should “be reconsidered.” What an understatement! We’ve been subjected to the most appalling, campfire/jingle music… The working paper, published July 7, outlines the topics that the bishops will discuss during the assembly. In connection with the question of liturgical singing, the paper states that “musicians and poets should be encouraged to compose new hymns,... Read more

When a nun or monk has advanced from the novice stage, they make what are called “first vows” or “temporary vows” – vows to continue to live according to the Rules and precepts of the community to which they belong, for a set amount of time – usually a couple of years. At the end of “first vows” the religious will then take their final vows, promising before God to remain in that life until their death. Temporary vows are... Read more

I noticed this yesterday on Ann Althouse’s blog and I was really hoping it would just go away, that we wouldn’t have to see the Democrats and some on the left once again bring themselves to the edge of something truly ugly by playing the “gay, gay, gay” card. But I should have known better. And this time, the left is going to really out-do itself, by the way, because they’re not only going to whisper “gay,” as they do... Read more

Ah, the perpetual adolescents are at it again. An affiliate of one of the nation’s leading abortion-rights groups is taking a hard-edged swipe at cultural conservatives by inviting young donors to a “Screw Abstinence Party.” The Washington-state affiliate of NARAL Pro-Choice America says the first-of-its-kind fund-raiser tomorrow night in Seattle targets young professionals in their 20s and 30s. A promo for the event says: “Tired of Bush & Co. spending your tax dollars on abstinence-only-until-marriage initiatives that promote dangerous misinformation?... Read more

We were just fooling around! You don’t have to go all gunslinger on us! Whaddya mean “shoot to kill?” Can’t you people take a freakin’ joke? Why you targeting us, anyway? I can understand how moderate Muslims who are not involved with the gang rapes in Australia, the murders of filmmakers, the blowing up of innocent people in buildings, carnivals, markets, subway tubes, etc might be uncomfortable with a “shoot to kill” policy. I can understand it. But maybe if... Read more

Ed Morrissey mentions that Islamists in Pakistan had a little trouble rounding up an angry mob to support Taliban-style extremism. Seems they could only find about 700 attendees. Ed says you can get a bigger crowd together for an opening of a new Krispy Kreme outlet. I’m thinking maybe there weren’t enough cameras onhand to be bothered going out and performing. Or, I’m thinking maybe this is another one of those “I blame Bush” moments. The rest of the world... Read more

As some of you have noticed, I bit the bullet yesterday and shook the tin can, asking for any spare change you could throw this way, via the Amazon Honor System, to help defray my monthly bandwidth-overuse. And I have been blown away by your generosity. I always knew I had some of the kindest readers in the blogosphere – turns out I have some of the most generous, too. Amazon has alerted me to the names of some but... Read more
