Very quickly. I’m thinking Ratzinger, whom I predicted would NOT be pope. It would not be unusual for me to be wrong. K-Lo at the Corner reminds us that today is the feastday of St. Leo IX, German pope. Have we today elected another German? I keep thinking of that moment at JPII’s funeral, when the crowd began to shout SANTO! SANTO, and the expression on Ratzinger’s face as he paused to let them expresse themselves. I think that moment... Read more

Pharmicists are coming under fire for refusing to fill prescriptions for the “morning after” pill. It is a matter of conscience. While ordinary birth control pills prevent ovulation, the morning after pill prevents implantation of a created embryo and may therefore be considered – literally – an easy abortion. Illinois Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich has ordered that pharmicists must fill the orders regardless of their personal feelings. This is going to be an issue to watch; it’s going to be... Read more

I still don’t think he’s the next to wear the Shoes of the Fisherman, but it’s an impressive homily. Hugh Hewitt has the whole thing here, you just have to scroll down abit. UPDATE: Mr. Hewitt starts off with a bang, today, discussing this sermon in more detail and linking to some related columns and articles. You’ll want to stop off there. He is so particularly insightful while ruminating on the columns of EJ Dionne and Richard Cohen, that you... Read more

Dana over at North Shore Politics writes “although I am not even a practicing Catholic, I was offended by it.” By what? This statement made this morning on ABC news: What our viewers will notice is that, among these 115 cardinals, who are wearing what looks like women’s garb, that there are no women. That is something the next pope is going to have to address. Says Dana: I was disgusted by that. How disrespectful for one (thing) and pompous... Read more

I remember a few years ago dreaming that there had been a papal election and the new pope was a very young man who chose the name Clement. Now, I’m just putting that up there, so that if we get a Clement out of this conclave, ya’ll know I had a dream about it – although I am pretty sure we will not get a ‘very young’ pope. The bookies have made Benedict XVI the favourite to be the new... Read more

When Canadian Geese fall out of trees and onto windshields, we MUST be in end times! I’ve never seen anything like that in my life. I’m driving home from picking up Buster’s latest prescription – and I see this giant Canadian goose…at least 25 lbs or more, fall through a tree, shattering the windshield of a passing car! I pull over to the side, to see if the driver is alright, and all I’m thinking is: WHAT THE??? CANADIAN GOOSE... Read more

Jay Cost’s article in the WSJ is creating a lot of buzz, as he asserts what some of us have been saying for a long time: Mrs. Clinton isn’t much of a politician. The problem, and it’s not one Cost addresses, is that she really needn’t be much of a politician to be very successful, because she has the unconditional backing of the MSM, and she has waterfalls of money being funneled in her direction from George Soros, Americans Coming... Read more

Once upon a time, I couldn’t accept compliments; I would blush and stammer, and say, “oh, no, not really,” (people must have found that so annoying…) I’ve learned how to accept a compliment and simply say “Thank you,” to four folks I admire quite a lot. I still blush, but at least you don’t have to listen to me stammer! Meanwhile, Buster, who was on the mend and had managed to both ably sing his Handel and play his sonata... Read more

In a mostly empty church, before the Blessed Sacrament. Just got back a little while ago from Adoration. One parish nearby has it during the week for a few hours, and I always try to make that, but another parish, a few towns over, has Nocturnal Adoration once a month, from 9PM to 6:30AM, and I always try to get there for it. Some background: Adoration is what we Catholics call it when the Blessed Sacrament is displayed in a... Read more

I like him best when he’s writing about baseball, but these are two good ones. The first is a exposition (with help by George Weigel) of the slow and steady suicide of Europe. Will blames secularism, and makes a good case. Europe itself is withering. On the day of John Paul II’s funeral, the European Union’s statistics agency reported that the decline of birthrates means that within five years deaths will exceed births in the European Union. By 2013 Italy’s... Read more
