Three excellent pieces, today, all making the very excellent and true argument that Catholics cannot really be labeled and pigeonholed into political and ideological caricatures, no matter how desperately the media (and too often Catholics themselves, of each other) try to do it. First up, Father Robert Barron looks at Paul Ryan and says, he’s neither the social menace or the knight in shining armor that partisans want you to believe: In its social teaching, this same sort of “bi-polar... Read more

A few weeks ago Deacon Greg posted this video, and people are still visiting it and many of them are sending it on to me, believing I must not have seen it, and wondering what I think about the “tolerance double standard” it reveals. Well, here’s my response to that, over at First Things: There is no denying that the notion of “tolerance” has become somewhat fluid in the United States over the last decade, or that double standards apply... Read more

If you’re not subscribing to The Catholic Answer, perhaps the September/October issue running up to the elections will get you to consider it. There, along with some excellent regular columns and the very help Q&A’s that define the magazine, you’ll find Russell Shaw writing about how Catholics should prepare to vote, and hitting on five notions: 1. Voting is a moral act — don’t vote frivolously or selfishly. 2. Don’t compartmentalize politics and morality. 3. Don’t absolutize politics, but don’t... Read more

My title is a bit of a tease, but it’s meant to direct your attention to Ed Morrissy’s exceptionally thorough and balanced look at Paul Ryan and all of the rhetoric being thrown around about his budget, the bishops, how he is perceived by progressives, the distinctly uncharitable “pray for his conversion” being recommended by some who presume to know the state of his soul, and of course, Ayn Rand. The key question of whether Ryan’s budget violates his faith... Read more

Found Via Deacon Greg: Government authorities from a district in the Central Highlands last week compelled ethnic villagers to remove Catholic pictures and items from their chapel and replaced them with images of Ho Chi Minh last weekend. “After local Catholics finished prayers in the chapel on Sunday morning, local government authorities came and asked them to remove a cross and a Marian picture from the chapel,” a Church source said. The source added that authorities from Kon Thuc hamlet,... Read more

Mark Shea calls him “one of the most generous people” he knows, and I concur; I’d add “most infectiously joyful” and also “tireless” (there’s youth for you). He’s got something new going on at his blog, and really, I can’t think of any reason for him to do it except his interest in promoting all-things-all-people Catholic in order to serve the faith. What’s he doing? Offering a huge number of Catholic writers and speakers for your consideration and asking you... Read more

Thanks to Leah Libresco who included this in a post full of interesting things — the evolution of women’s gymnastics and the uneven bars: I admit, as thrilling as it was to see Olga Korbut’s astounding backflip off the high bar, I’m glad they’re no longer allowed to do that, or those pelvic whips, which may have been fine at the slower speeds of the 1950’s but I think have to be pretty harmful/painful with today’s faster-paced routines. Check out... Read more

It becomes increasingly evident that, as William Schneider is quoted as saying, “the press . . . just doesn’t ‘get’ religion” — so much so that Deacon Greg, in addition to all of the other news-mining he engages in every day for our edification, has lately taken to chronicling the media balldrops on the subject. Even better than a Deacon/Journalist keeping track of media mishaps on religion is a whole site dedicated to the daily monitoring and analysis of press... Read more

Apparently today President Obama met with his gaffe-stricken veep and his Secretary of State. A few wags have suggested recently that a put-upon Obama may “switch” these two — putting Biden at State (John Kerry will be crushed, and our diplomatic relations may never be the same, anywhere) and Hillary Clinton on his ticket. Mrs. Clinton would certainly be a better debater against Paul Ryan than Biden. Lots of opinion out there. Some think Hillary won’t do it — that... Read more
