What is the holy book of Muslims, and why is it sacred? August 8, 2022

The Quran is the holy book of Muslims and the foundation of their belief and practice. The word ‘Quran’ means ‘the recitation’. It is the word of Allah(SWT) that was revealed to the last prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It is also regarded as a miracle by many Muslims, due to its beauty and depth of meaning. Muslims believe that the Quran is a guidance for all of humanity and that it contains the eternal truths of God.

How was the Quran revealed?

The Quran was revealed in Arabic and has remained in that language ever since. It was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad over a period of 23 years from 610-623 C.E. It was first revealed to him in the city of Mecca, and then later in the city of Medina.

As it was revealed to him as the literal word of Allah(SWT) through angel Gabriel, He recited them to his companions. These verses were then written down, recited, and memorized. Ever since the Quran was revealed, its text has remained unchanged in any form over the past 1500 years as Allah says in the Quran that he is the one who will be guarding this book till eternity.

“Surely it is We Who have revealed the Exposition, and surely it is We Who are its guardians” (15:10)

After all the revelations were completed, the Prophet arranged all the chapters of the Quran in sequence as we have it to date. It is divided into 114 chapters and 30 parts.

Why is Quran a sacred book?

The Quran is a source of guidance for all of humanity. Muslims believe that it contains the answers to all of life’s questions and that it is a mercy from God to all of mankind. It is a book of wisdom that teaches all mankind to lead a righteous life based on ethics, the duties of people towards Allah(SWT) and other people, and the prohibitions upon them.

This book is recited by Muslims all over the world every day and during salah to gain rewards from Allah(SWT).

“The Qur’an as a guide to mankind also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong)…”(al-Baqara, 2/185).

“The Quran is guidance and glad tidings for those who believe.”(al-Baqara, 2/97).

“And this is a Book which We have revealed as a blessing: so follow it and be righteous, that ye may receive mercy.”(al-Anam, 6/155).

What are its teachings???

The Quran is a compilation of attributes of Allah(SWT), the purpose of human life, the way to lead one’s life, the historic events of some prophets and peoples, glad tiding for the believers, and warning for the non-believers.

The Quran teaches that there is only one God and that Muhammad is His final prophet. It also teaches that all people are equal in the eyes of God and that we should love our fellow human beings. The Quran also contains guidance on how we should live our lives, including how to treat our families, how to earn a living, and how to conduct ourselves in society. The Quran also teaches us about the day of Judgment, when all people will be brought before God to be judged according to their deeds. We can find every small detail about leading one’s life in an Islamic way. It has all the rules and regulations which are to be followed.

There are many things that we need to know before reading the Quran, like the proper way of holding it, the cleanliness of our body and clothes, the place where we should sit while reading, etc. We should read Quran with full concentration and attention. We should not rush while reading it. We should try to understand the meaning of each and every word. We should also learn how to recite it correctly.
