Center for Christian Business Ethics Conference Gathers Business Leaders and Theologians

Center for Christian Business Ethics Conference Gathers Business Leaders and Theologians September 18, 2014

On October 11, the Center for Christian Business Ethics will gather Christian business leaders and theologians to wrestle with the practical questions business people deal with every day. Through breakout sessions, they will explore topics including:

  • Managing abundance
  • The entrepreneur’s challenge: taking business risks with God’s money
  • Five reasons why Christianity doesn’t = business success
  • The Sunday-Monday problem

Each session will pair a business person and a theologian to facilitate. Panelists and facilitators will include Peter Heslam (University of Cambridge Transforming Business, University of Oxford Entrepreneurial Leadership Initiative), Joanna Sheridan (Grace and Mercy Foundation) and Don Barefoot (The C12 Group).

We spoke with Phil Clements, CFCBE’s founder and managing director. Asked about the challenges facing Christian business leaders today, he said that he would like to see business people become more comfortable with the idea that business is good.

“In God’s world, business done right is a blessing,” Clements explained. “Business is a community that starts with customers, then employees, then shareholders and the broader community.”

In order to meet today’s challenges, Clements encouraged practitioners to “know the Bible” first and foremost. He also emphasized that understanding the concept of calling and being rooted in relationship with God are essential for business leaders.
