EXCERPT FROM LAWRENCE GARCIA: The term “rapture” within eschatological discourse can take on many shades of meaning and nuance; some are convinced the term can be retained as long as we are sure to clarify what is meant by it. However, I’m persuaded that the term is beyond recovery seeing its continual use may lead to a slow “death of a thousand qualifications.” There is simply too much sociopolitical baggage that accompanies the term itself. Hence, I will employ the term... Read more
*This post is old… like from the beginning of blogging old. I might nuance this differently if asked the same question today, but the essence remains the same. It originally appeared at The Charismanglican blog (June 2010). The question of why theology matters is an interesting one. On one hand, it could be said that knowing Jesus through the Spirit is what actually matters and theology actually gets in the way of such a relationship. On the other hand, it ... Read more
In June of 2011, I posted an article called “You Might Be and Evangelical Reject If…” Honestly, it shocked me to learn about how many readers resonated with being an Evangelical Reject. Many of us, who would still like to cling to the good things about evangelicalism (without some of the fundamentalist baggage of the past) often find ourselves ostracized because we challenge the cultural mold of conservative Christianity. One of the things that I’ve been accused of on a few occasions is being anti-american. This, of course, is absurd. Am I anti-self? I’m an american myself, for goodness sake, and I have no inclination to renounce my citizenship or turn in my passport. I didn’t see Apostle Paul do that with his Roman citizenship so why would I? With that said, I will answer my web-haters (specifically those who have said things like “If you don’t like the... Read more

In this sermon clip from last weekend, Greg discusses how throughout Scripture, we see a strong emphasis on positive traditions in the Church. In both the Old and New Testament, God repeatedly calls his people to be anchored with a sense of history. In this sermon, Greg explains why the Anabaptist tradition is closest to Woodland Hills. [I am excited to have another guest blog by my friend Joey. He is someone I admire in many ways and commend this article and his books to you.] By Joey LeTourneau Many years ago my dad was in the middle of a successful and advancing television career. He was a news anchor for a major affiliate and the roads ahead were promising. But God was calling, and my dad couldn’t help but listen. He was being called out of... Read more
In March, Love Wins for Teens: If God Threw a Party, Would Everyone Be Invited? Would You?, will be released. I think that this is going to be a great resource for teenagers. I worked with students for several years and this is the vision of God they are longing for. If the teen edition is anything as compelling as the original, this is bound to be a great resource. Here’s the book trailer: Here’s the description: Love Wins shot... Read more
In the past, I took Lent to an extreme. Two years ago, my wife and I lived our daily lives off of two dollars a day. That experiment in simplicity filled me with a deeper appreciation for what I have, especially in regards to food. One of the lasting effects of that Lent experience was the issue of eating meat. On two dollars a day, meat is basically impossible to afford. This meat-and-potatoes guy didn’t consume chicken, beef, pork, or... Read more
