April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.  Over 3 million children estimated to have suffered from this in the last year. Nearly 2,000 of them died, murdered, neglected. In 1 Kings 1-11, 21 we get a sweeping story of the downfall of Israel.  Israel chose to go after other gods and the things of Egypt.  A key passage in this narrative dealing Solomon is the visit from the Queen of Sheba who says: …he made you king to maintain justice and righteousness.  1 Kings 10.9 Solomon was called to justice and righteousness and failed at both.  First, lets look at justice. …the account of the forced labor king... Read more

Kurt’s Note: My friend Dan Martin who blogs over at Nailing it to the Door, submitted this guest post on the false dichotomy people set up for understanding Hell.  I agree with his basic premise and have outlined my view in the series “Hell Yes. Hell No! Or Who the Hell Cares?.” ————————————————————————————————————————————————- A common phenomenon within theological, political, and other discussions that get us worked up, is that someone frames a question as “either-or” and then others jump onto... Read more

That might be the most significant question of all. My wife and I are planning to lead a team into the Northwest for a church-planting project. But this will not happen until late summer of 2013. And, well, it’s not even the beginning of summer for 2012.... Read more

The following is part of a series on Hell, partially as a response to the Love Wins controversy.  To catch up, go here. As I stated in the first post, this section will be mostly based on Sharon Baker’s Razing Hell. ———————- As I’ve already stated, for some time the traditional view of hell contradicts the overall biblical witness. I resonate with Sharon Baker’s perspective in many ways, however with some nuances. I want to briefly describe two distinctions that... Read more

FROM SMITHSONIAN.COM’S SURPRISING SCIENCE: Sunday is the 42nd celebration of Earth Day, which was started in 1970 by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson to help educate people about environmental issues and demonstrate public support for a conservationist agenda. With that in mind, we decided it was the right time to recap the most surprising, awe-inspiring and alarming things that we have learned about the Earth and the environment since last year’s holiday: 1. Undiscovered species are still out there: Countless discoveries... Read more
