*This is a guest post. Thanks to my good web friend, Al Molineaux for this challenging guest piece.  Connect with him on Twitter. My wife and I have been on a twenty year journey of church planting; that is to say a twenty year journey of deconstruction. It started, as these things often do, with a dissatisfaction with the status quo. It became apparent that, along with Bono and the boys, we still hadn’t found what we were looking for.... Read more

*Originally posted on Dec 20, 2010 Many would consider the Roman Empire one of the greatest civilizations in history. In regard to the New Testament, the story of early Christianity finds its setting under the shadow of a meta-narrative[1] that dominated most of the Mediterranean world and even beyond. Caesar Augustus is the earliest figure of the Roman Empire that the New Testament makes reference to, as he was the emperor during the time of Jesus’ birth (Luke 2). Born... Read more

Being Good News “The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me… he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed.” -Isaiah 61:1 Read Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11 Two years ago I attended a Bible study primarily composed of homeless folks in a downtown coffee shop. My hope was to learn from these dear people and to place myself in a position to create friendships. During a time of sharing I listened as a single father (with his two... Read more

“Don’t you think our culture so depraved and rushing toward total moral decay?  Wasn’t it better off when we were growing up in a God-fearing society?” My answer, whenever I’m asked this by a student or church member is always “No, things are not getting worse. This world is no more Fallen now than it’s ever been in the past.” Usually the “our-culture-is-heading-headlong-into-hell-in-a-handbasket” (alliteration is fun!) line of argument is made by those who long for “the good ol’ days”…you... Read more

Then one foggy Sex-mas Eve, Victoria came to say: Consumer with your eyes so wide, buy this bra and panties tonight. Twenty-year-old young women wearing unmentionables stare into the camera saying: “Tell me you love me.  Tell me you want me.  Excite me.”  Getting your yuletide jollies yet? Let’s be honest: the girls in the Victoria’s Secret commercial sound fake.  Their attempts at sexy come across as cheesy.  And if the nearly bare bosoms of consumerism haven’t bombarded you yet... Read more

This short video = lame. Really? Obama’s war on religion? And the evidence???? LGBT folks can come out of the closet in the military???? Ya, that’s a real sacrilege… That certainly matters more than the real problem with the military: they kill human beings and fight foolish wars endorsed by self proclaimed followers of Jesus. My solution to this video? Rick Perry needs to read Greg Boyd’s The Myth of a Christian Nation. Rant, over. THOUGHTS? As a bit of... Read more
