Mark Driscoll gets this one right. Seriously. In my opinion, we ought to have the freedom to use language contextually and not be bound by religiosity. That doesn’t mean that we ought to cuss like a sailor, but words have power… even what our culture considers offensive. (To be clear, I don’t often agree with under-girding theological assumptions that drive his use of foul or provocative language at various times) I grew up in a context where Paul’s words were... Read more

I wanted to share this video with you to stimulate conversation about simplicity and consumerism. Consumption not only is bad for the planet, for impoverished people, and for animals – but it can pollute the soul. This has certainly been true in my life. Jesus warns us not to find our value “in the abundance of possessions” but the culture of the USA seems to have more authority in my life on a day-to-day basis. This is especially true when... Read more

Guest Author: Andrew Himes is the author of the new book, ‘The Sword of the Lord: The Roots of Fundamentalism in an American Family.’ ——————— Kinyarwanda: Forgiveness is Freedom, a new movie from talented African American director Alrick Brown, is not a movie about genocide, though it is set in  Rwandan during the 100 days in 1994 during which over 1,000,000 Tutsis were killed by Hutus in an internecine bloodbath. Instead, Kinyawanda is a story of the healing power of forgiveness... Read more

Just prior to speaking, the text was read aloud by a reader (John 20). You may want to turn there to follow along. This was a message given at a Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary chapel on November 30, 2011. Read more

I disagree with JMac on almost every theological “non-essential” yet he is my Christian brother.  I can imagine that some of my readers won’t like me saying this, but who am I to say otherwise? In this video, its a refreshing step away from the radical Christian right.  I disagree with the dichotomy he creates, but this perspective is a better alternative than the view espoused by Moral Majority preachers (who would share most of his theological views, I imagine). ... Read more

Jesus asks Peter: Who do you say I am? Peter answers: You are the Messiah, the son of the living God!  Good answer. It seems to me that there are several ways that people attempt to answer this fundamental question.  I’m going to attempt to summarize this by creating unfair stereotype-based categories. Liberal Jesus This Jesus is hip.  He walked around Galilee sportin’ Hebraic dreds and eating mysterious-yet-kosher plants that gave him moments of groovy wisdom.  “Man, you should totally... Read more

It may surprise many of my readers to know that one of my early influences in re-thinking major theological paradigms was Hank Hanegraaff, the bible answer man.  If I was in my car during the 3 o’clock hour, it’s guaranteed that I was listening to his radio show.  He gave me space to think about Revelation as something that mostly speaks to a First Century reality (although, I’ve since then decided that I hold to a late-date view rather than... Read more
