Pastor and theologian John Stott passed away today at the age of 90. The more I read him, the more I am blessed that he made room for some of us younger evangelicals to wrestle with many difficult theological issues of our day. Something happened last week.  I went on a retreat with an amazing spiritual director / teacher named Jan Johnson.  By the end of our time together I realized that I’m done with living like a Christian. I’m done serving the poor. I’m done going the extra mile. I’m done being a husband who strives to love his wife as Christ loves the church. I’m done visiting the sick. I started my theological studies thinking about being a youth pastor. It might have been my involvement in youth ministry and my youth’s pastor’s influence on me that propelled me in that direction. But soon, the academic bug bit me, and my interests in thinking about ministry in a pastoral dimension waned to thinking about pursuing a vocation in theological education, being a lecturer someday. But people keep telling me that to be a good teacher I needed to plunge... Read more
