I’ve wanted to write this blog series (and another on womanhood) for a good long while but haven’t found the time. I’ll do this over a couple of days in order to adequately cover the subject on an introductory level (note that tomorrow I’ll talk more about men called to singleness or who struggle to find a wife). I intend it not to be a jeremiad, a scorching screed, but a little help to those who are trying to figure... Read more

1. Timmy Brister has a nice summary of what evangelicals are saying about Sarah Palin’s Vice President bid as a mother of five children.  Also, see Dave Schrock’s helpful blog for a similar survey. 2. A thoughtful post by Dustin Benge on the role of the OT in pastoral theology. 3. DC evangelical Joe Carter writes provocatively about ghostwriters (I wrote this sentence myself, I promise.) (HT: JT) 4. A treasure trove of soundbite resources from reformed pastors and leaders... Read more

Andrew Nichols has some great thoughts on this subject in a recent article published on the 9Marks website.  It’s entitled “Embedded Portraits: A Theological Vision for Families 3”. I commend it to all who are young parents, like myself, and thus thinking about how to raise godly sons and daughters in ways that honor the scriptural roles for each sex, insofar as they are distinctly different at several points. Nichols follows John Piper’s thinking on the subject and helpfully distills... Read more

The Henry Center has just released a helpful essay on religious pluralism from missiologist and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School professor Harold Netland has just published his essay for the Christ on Campus Initiative, titled “One Lord and Savior for All? Jesus Christ and Religious Diversity”.  (I know, it’s Netland week here at owenstrachan.com!)  This essay, intended to help nineteen-year-old students in university settings, covers questions of pluralism and offers a thoughtful take on the exclusivity of the person and work... Read more

I recently conducted an interview w/Harold Netland on the subject of world religions, religious pluralism, and global Christianity. Dr. Netland, a chaired professor of Christian missions at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, IL, is a contributor to the forthcoming ESV Study Bible. He very graciously agreed to sit down with me for almost fifty minutes to discuss his contribution to the project and his work in the aforementioned fields. I found the interview personally enlightening and quite enjoyable. Dr.... Read more

A buddy of mine passed on a link to what looks like a fascinating talk by pastor Mark Driscoll of Seattle’s Mars Hill Church.  Given to some 600 Anglicans (!) in Sydney last week, the talk represents Driscoll’s view of the challenges for effective ministry in Australia.  I don’t have audio for it, but I can link to a summary of Driscoll’s remarks published on a blog. Here’s an excerpt from the talk on the state of Australian manhood: “Christian... Read more

1. An excellent Carl Trueman article on the temptation of professor-worship (HT:JT).  We’ve all seen this happen, but Trueman makes some good points (and is so much fun to read).  An excerpt: “The cult of professor worship is perhaps the most dangerous and reprehensible cult in the theological world.  It is no respecter of theological position, afflicting the left just as much as the right.  It is no respecter of intellectual ability, as the psychology of leader-follower is predicated more... Read more

I’m excited to let you know about an upcoming conference sponsored by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. It’s called “The Politics of Jesus” and it will be held as a one-day event on Friday, October 10th, 2008 at the First Baptist Church of Durham, NC, an important SBC and reformed church. Some of you will recognize the name of the church’s pastor, Dr. Andy Davis, a neo-Puritan shepherd who represents robust theological ministry in the finest sense. He... Read more

The first print edition of The City, a journal from Houston Baptist University, is out.  Robert Sloan, the former president of Baylor University and a courageous and visionary Christian leader, heads up HBU and shares a few words about the journal.  The first issue is quite promising and will be of interest to pastors, laypeople, and scholars alike. Here’s a nice excerpt from Tim Keller’s article, “The Gospel for the City” (no link available),  which originated from a talk at... Read more

I work for the Henry Center at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, IL.  The Center publishes for free a series of essays designed to outfit intellectual Christian students and laypeople meet contemporary challenges to the faith.  The Henry Center is pleased to announce the release of two important articles that cover apologetic topics relative to religious and intellectual challenges of the current day. “I Believe in Nature: An Exploration of Naturalism and the Biblical Worldview” by Kirsten Birkett is... Read more
