Here’s my final post for a while. I’m getting married tomorrow, and will commence with the honeymoon shortly thereafter. Blogging, like a good many things, will then be far from my mind. You understand. A few scattered thoughts just came to me as I drove through the night to my apartment. I had just left Bethany’s home and was generally quite tired from the day’s events. Yet even after errands, a rehearsal, and a rehearsal dinner, I still had a... Read more

My generation thinks that it is best to be free of any moral or ethical responsibilty when it comes to romance. The ideal among my peers seems to be that one derives the most enjoyment and love for oneself from a variety of partners. Thinking mathematically, that may seem to make some sense. When one plays this idea against common sense, however, it falls far short of any mark of sensibility. Ask a married person, perhaps one who attracted a... Read more

Now three days from wedded bliss, I am conscious that I am walking toward responsibility. It is right and good that I, a 25-year-old man, take a woman to be my wife. As I do so, I am aware that many of my peers do not share my conviction. It seems that the default setting for my generation is “do whatever you want to do.” Responsibility does not really enter into things for my peers. Why would it? There is... Read more

I am now four days from being married. Those are some surreal words to write. Life these days is a combination of slowed-down and sped-up. It seems incredible that I’m four days from leaving the “Singles” ranch. In one sense, I’m amazed that my departure is so close. At the same time, I feel a bit like someone has hit the slo-mo button on my life. I notice each hour that passes, and bid it farewell as I would an... Read more

Bethany and I just finished watching “The Two Towers” last night, and boy, did it speak to me. It is difficult to overestimate the affection I have for epics. I really, really, really love them. They encompass so much of what is good in cinema. Big, sweeping plots, usually with transcendent causes. This in place of the often minimal plot and end of your average movie. Romance, but not in the cheap, sex-saturated way. More in a meaningful, bounded, wondrous... Read more

If you’re reading this, you’re probably American. And if you’re American, you’re probably ignoring the World Cup. And if you’re ignoring the World Cup, you’re missing one of the Best Things in the World. Few things on this globe bring humanity together like the World Cup. It’s a worldwide soccer tournament, in short, in which eleven men represent an entire country in the hopes of bringing home glory and goal-scoring accolades. Why is it so great? Let me count the... Read more

That’s quite a claim, I guess. And alot of pressure to put on one artist’s catalog. But Mat Kearney makes the kind of music that speaks to the existence of another language, one spoken across the world, without words of any kind. His is the music of subtle emotion and deep, inward realities that you feel without reservation but struggle to articulate. It is music like his that gives us one of the Best Things in the World. Not every... Read more

Hi. I’m in the midst of a storm called “Hurricane Pre-wedding” that washed on my shores a few weeks ago. Actually, things are going great (July 8th is the day!), but it’s just a bit hectic. And you loyal readers understand–when it’s a tossup between posting on one’s beloved blog or spending time with one’s beloved fiancee, you know which side wins. But that has not stopped me from continuing this, the blog series with the most grandiose title possible:... Read more

It’s time for a new series. I hope that this is one is uplifting. There’s not enough uplifting stuff in the world, and the world is filled with goodness. We should celebrate the good things more and breed a thankful heart in ourselves. These are in no particular order. Feel free to add your own in the comments section. (I do read all comments and I love getting them.) Nursing a good book on a sunny afternoon Are you kidding?... Read more

Yes, that’s right. Does anyone wear watches anymore? I’m not sure many people do. Okay, some people do. Sure. But think en masse. Do the majority of folks out there wear a watch on a day-to-day basis? My theory is this: no. Watches, like fiction, like valor, like, ummm, other things, are dead. What has caused the death of the watch, once one of the prized possessions of the business jet-setter? It’s pretty simple. The cell phone. Take me, for... Read more
