Tyndale House, located at Cambridge University in the U.K., has recently debuted a website entitled 4Gospels.com that is devoted to disseminating a biblically faithful conception of the four New Testament gospels. Here’s the site self-description: “Welcome to 4Gospels.com, a site run by scholars and postgraduate students based mainly in Cambridge, England, providing accessible information on the 4 Gospels in the New Testament as well as many other writings which are or have been called gospels.” This excellent site, featuring the... Read more

I don’t care if you like basketball or not–you must watch this YouTube clip. The video features Bruce Manley, a 25-year-old bank employee from Sparta, NJ.  A SlamOnline article explains a bit about the backstory.  Apparently, Shaquille saw the video and twittered a H.O.R.S.E. challenge to Manley. Here’s what Manley says of his shotmaking: ““Some of the shots take a little while,” Manley says. “If I shoot it behind the back from the other foul line, I’m still confident that... Read more

Breaking news from Alaska (you don’t say that everyday): “Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska announced Friday that she would step down by the end of the month and not seek a second term as governor, fueling speculation that she is trying to position herself as a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012. Ms. Palin, who was Senator John McCain’s vice presidential running mate last year and solidified the support of the party’s conservative base, explained her decision at... Read more

Got alot for you today. 1. Here’s a helpful talk Tim Keller did on raising kids in the city.  I enjoyed his talk, which lists three cons and eight pros.  I also liked the Q&A–some great stuff came up.  It starts after roughly thirty minutes. 2. Speaking of Keller, he did a debate with Ligon Duncan on women deacons.  Derek Thomas says a word about it on Ref21.  Check that out. 3. Have you heard Leann Rimes sing Patsy Cline’s... Read more

I’m guessing that not many of my readers would remember this almost five-year-old list of National Review’s 100 best books of the twentieth century.  Though many blog readers are guilty of chronological snobbery, I assure you that this is a list most worthy of looking over. Here are some noteworthy selections from the list, compiled by such intellectual conservative heavyweights as Richard John Neuhaus, David Brooks, George Gilder, John Keegan, and Mary Ann Glendon.  This would be a great list... Read more

The latest version of the 9Marks ejournal is up (PDF here).  It’s all about missions, and there is a great deal of material to work through.  I found the following article, “How to Get Businesspeople into Missions”, quite interesting. The article first outlines how many Christians think of missions: “Most churches already understand how they can support missions through prayer and financial support. Yet many churches overlook how members can put their business skills to work for the sake of... Read more

For those of you who did not follow my post about the Southern Seminary sesquicentennial and the subsequent discussion it sparked, Andy Naselli put together a nice blog about the two sides related to the McCall Pavilion controversy at Southern.  I’ll skip a lengthy summary and say this: Greg Gilbert and Mark Rogers agreed with my take on SBTS naming a pavilion after professed SBC “moderate” Duke McCall, and fundamentalist leader Dave Doran disagreed with it.  I read the remarks... Read more

1. Just one link in this busy week.  For those who have not heard of this conference, it is worth noting: “God Exposed: Awkward Preaching in a Comfortable Age — September 25-26, 2009 — Sponsored by 9Marks and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary God Exposed will call pastors and church leader to embrace and defend expositional preaching as a means to strengthen and grow the church. Expositional preaching – that which has as its aim to explain and apply a particular portion... Read more

Today Southern Seminary–or, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary–celebrated its 150th anniversary.  This is known in fancy chronological language as a sesquicentennial. The day was an eventful and meaningful one.  Events at SBTS included a lunch at 12:30pm that drew way over 1000 people; a time for campus tours and fellowship afterwards; and a ceremony at the seminary chapel at 3pm that formally commemorated the occasion.  The celebration drew hundreds of alumni to the school and allowed believers from various stations... Read more

I’m in the River City (Louisville, KY) for vacation.  My trip has coincided with a number of fun events: first, the annual Southern Baptist Convention, and second, the 150th anniversary of Southern Seminary, my alma mater.  The SBTS extravaganza is tomorrow, so I’ll talk about that then.  For now, here are a few thoughts from the last couple days of the SBC: 1. There’s a movement afoot in the SBC, if you haven’t heard.  It’s called the “Great Commission Resurgence”, and... Read more
