There are people all over the world hungry for God’s words. Some carry tattered Bibles passed down from generation to generation hoping the pages will remain intact.  Others sit and listen to God’s word preached in secret underground churches–what they would give to hold a copy of God’s word in their hands.

Yet here in America, Bibles are a dime a dozen. I hate to admit it, but I have six copies of different versions. Some I hardly open. Others are well-worn. Plus, with the internet at my disposal and my phone apps, I can access God’s word all day long whenever and wherever I am.

But Why Are God’s Words so Coveted?

Jesus answered by quoting Deuteronomy: “It takes more than bread to stay alive. It takes a steady stream of words from God’s mouth” (Matthew 4:4 MSG).

God’s constant communication with us is mind-blowing, life-changing, transformative! Nature shows us his words every day.  Are you watching?

Psalm 19:1-6 MSG reveals:

God’s glory is on tour in the skies,
God-craft on exhibit across the horizon.

Madame Day holds classes every morning,
Professor Night lectures each evening.

Their words aren’t heard,
their voices aren’t recorded,
But their silence fills the earth:
unspoken truth is spoken everywhere.

God makes a huge dome
for the sun—a superdome!

The morning sun’s a new husband
leaping from his honeymoon bed,
The day-breaking sun an athlete
racing to the tape.

That’s how God’s Word vaults across the skies
from sunrise to sunset,
Melting ice, scorching deserts,
warming hearts to faith.

These visions we get the honor to witness each day are just a few ways God speaks to us. We see Him in the opening of a spring flower, hear His sweet voice in the meadow lark’s song, and witness the splendor of His artistry at work in the ice formed on a car windshield.

If we pay attention, He speaks to us all day long. He waits patiently for us to respond. He delights in our delight. He holds us when we’re in anguish. His words offer us comfort, strength, and hope for a better tomorrow. It gives us direction and guides us toward joy.

Psalm 19: 7-9 MSG reveals:

The revelation of God is whole
and pulls our lives together.

The signposts of God are clear
and point out the right road.

The life-maps of God are right,
showing the way to joy.

The directions of God are plain
and easy on the eyes.

God’s reputation is twenty-four-carat gold,
with a lifetime guarantee.

The decisions of God are accurate
down to the nth degree.

God’s word is so much more than we can imagine. It’s better than jewels. Sweeter than a red ripe strawberry. It warns us of danger. Shows us hidden treasures. Keeps us on clean, straight paths. Steers us away from stupid sins. It revives our soul. Brings us wisdom. Gives us joy in our hearts. His words provide light to our eyes. They offer a great reward.

Psalm 19:10-11 MSG says:

God’s Word is better than a diamond, better than a diamond set between emeralds.

You’ll like it better than strawberries in spring, better than red, ripe strawberries.

There’s more: God’s Word warns us of danger and directs us to hidden treasure.

Otherwise, how will we find our way? Or know when we play the fool?

Let God’s words transform you! We need Him desperately. Whether we’re sitting with Fear and need assistance, encouragement when trying to escape Guilt, or needing guidance to be free from Doubt we can find help in the pages of God’s word—The Bible.

Don’t just read God’s word for information, listen for His voice. Prayer is the necessary follow-up to reading His word. When we pray and wait, He will reveal Himself to us in ways we could never imagine.

Psalm 19:12-14 MSG, David gives us a good example of how to pray:

Clean the slate, God, so we can start the day fresh! Keep me from stupid sins,

from thinking I can take over your work;

Then I can start this day sun-washed, scrubbed clean of the grime of sin.

These are the words in my mouth; these are what I chew on and pray.

Accept them when I place them on the morning altar, O God, my Altar-Rock, God, Priest-of-My-Altar.

Heaven forbid we lose the privilege to have access to God’s Word. But if we someday find ourselves in the same situation with no Bible or access to one, I pray God’s Word will spill out of us from the overflow that’s already in our hearts.

If you feel lost, like something’s missing in your life, or maybe you feel a tugging at your heart. While you still can, dive into the Scriptures. ‘Cause there you’ll find mind-blowing, life-changing, transforming words and He waits for you with open arms.
