Surely we’ve lost control.
At least that’s how it feels.
College campuses aflame with pubescent rage,
Demanding fairy-tale endings and fictive safe harbors
When hell itself has all but been loosed upon us.
Narcissistic ramblings supplant political discourse,
Opinions scrutinized wholly by emotional self-truths.
What once was solid, and concrete, and firm
Now feels fluid, and abstract, and yielding.
Even among those who profess charity, and mercy, and love
Anger and bitter obsession seem most often to prevail.
I tire. I stress. I feel moved to abandon.
It is your peace, your comfort for which I thirst,
I cry out for your warmth. I reach out for your hand.
Help me to turn my eyes from the dis-ease that everywhere surrounds.
And to secure some sort of savage detachment,
Away from all things here, all things now.
Let my soul slowly breathe, once again,
In rhythm with your spirit.
And let me, finally, grasp the depths of your love for us,
As I try harder, now, to find you in the face of the other.
Peace
