Well, as you can see if you’re reading this, I’ve already moved.  And I’m thrilled to be here.  I join the ranks of other great bloggers (and friends) like Scot McKnight and Bruce Reyes-Chow.  I’ve moved primarily because Patheos will afford me the opportunity to broaden my readership.  Plus, I’ll be involved in multi-blogger conversations, like the current series, “What Is Progressive Christianity and Why Does It Matter?” On that note, I have asked Patheos that I not be confines... Read more

As I hinted last week, I’m tapering off on blogging for the next week or so, with a big change and significant increase in volume coming on June 1.  Watch this space for more details. In the meantime, I’ve been at the family cabin the north woods of Minnesota, reading and prepping for the class on Christian Spirituality that I’m teaching (along with Lauren Winner and Phyllis Tickle) next month at Fuller Seminary. Here’s a post I wrote last year... Read more

Been super busy this week.  I’m also taking a bit of a breather on the blog as I’m going to be amping up my blogging significantly beginning on June 1. But I did want to drop a shout-out to the great folks in Minnesota and Indiana who attended Social Phonics Boot Camps yesterday and today.  Below are a couple images of the day, from the incomparable Courtney Perry.  We’ve added five Coaches to the Social Phonics team, and we’re booking... Read more

Those of us involved in youth ministry are well-aware of Dare 2 Share, the ministry of Greg Stier.  Well, the Utne Reader has an interesting post up which takes aim at D2S’s evangelistic web resources, in which students are given advice for sharing their faith with Willow the Wiccan, Sid the Satanist, Jenna the Jew, and Nicole the New Ager, and Jordan the Jehovah’s Witness (complete with mugshots!). Willow the Wiccan: “Whether Willow knows it or not, she is in... Read more

Dear State Senator Geoff Michel and Representative Pat Mazorol, Your party’s move to put to a statewide vote a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between a man and a woman is unnecessary (we already have a state law on the books that defines marriage as such).  It is also a political ploy, attempting to fire up the conservative base, bringing them to the polls in hopes of defeating Barack Obama.  I hope it backfires on you (and, if today’s... Read more

Some of my friends have weighed in the on the Sojo-BelieveOutLoud controversy, as have some commenters on yesterday’s post.  Nadia Bolz-Weber comes out of blog-hibernation to write, Are the poor more important than GLBTQ folks?  Is it ok to throw the rights of one group under the bus so that another group’s rights might be upheld? I wish there were really clear back and white answers here but the fact is that we live in a much more ambiguous world... Read more

If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it a thousand times: some erstwhile young church planter says to me, “I’m really looking to plant an Acts 2 church.”  Usually, they’re moving to Seattle-the-most-unchurched-city-in-America-actually-closer-to-Europe-than-to-anywhere-in-the-U.S.  My retort is always the same: “Yeah, that lasted about five verses; then God started killing the liars.” Well, that wonderful little passage at the end of Acts 2 comes up in the lectionary this week.  Russell Rathbun, curator of The Hardest Question, a lectionary blog, has... Read more

So, it seems that Jim Wallis* has gotten into a bit of a kerfuffle for rejecting a magazine ad from Believe Out Loud, a pan-denominational campaign to increase the number of congregations that are welcoming** to LGBT folks.  The best rundown of the controversy with all the important links can be found at Religion Dispatches. As RD posted and others have made clear, Wallis has avoided addressing LGBT issues for years.  And that’s because Wallis knows, as he states in... Read more
