For the sake of our discussion of Original Sin, commenter Brian has translated Romans 5 [UPDATE: it seems to be Romans 14-15] on our behalf.  Thanks, Brian!  (N.B., mean-spirited comments about his translation will be immediately deleted.  Thoughtful, albeit critical, comments are welcome.) Welcome those who are traditional in faith, those who still believe in original sin, but not for the purpose of quarreling over opinions. Emergent Christians believe in deconstructing all theologies, while the Traditional Christians only deconstruct certain... Read more

Brian has a warning for Mark Driscoll and other expanding evangelical ministries: Thanks for this post. This is depressing news. I don’t mean any disrespect to these folks personally. I know they can be very kind, good people in person. So I will offer my critique in the form of their teachings. I think the teachings of people like Mark Driscoll and Hank Hanegraaff are dangerous. They argue that there is one Truth in world and they know it. According... Read more

So, I’m on a panel with one of the authors of an anti-emergent book at the Christian Book Expo next month, and I emailed his publisher, Moody Publishing, to get a review copy of the book (no, I haven’t read it yet; yes, I plan to…skim it). Well, after several failed emails, I finally read the fine print.  It seems that the moody.edu incoming mail server has blocked the beliefnet.com URL!  Don’t they know that Bnet is owned by FOX?!? Read more

Mark Driscoll watchdog, Bob Hyatt, has some concerns about a possible Mars Hill franchise coming to Portland. Please understand- If you want to listen to Mark’s podcast/watch his vodcast, I think you should go for it- I subscribe to his podcast for crying out loud. But where we’re going with this is eventually a Mark Driscoll, Andy Stanley, Ed Young Jr, Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, et al Video Franchise in every major city, the further Wal-Martization of the church and,... Read more

FYI, Captcha was disabled for about a week — we were listening to those of you who were frustrated with the Bnet comment interface.  As you might guess, we were inundated by spam comments during this time.  So, now we’re turning it back on, but without the time-out function.  That should save you some frustration when you comment. However, some of you are still duplicating your comments because it doesn’t seem that your comment went through the first time.  So,... Read more

If you haven’t been following along there’s a great comment string under Monday’s post, Is Virtual Community True Community?, then you’re missing out. Particularly interesting, IMHO, are the comments from stay-at-home-moms Julie and Kristi about the great value of virtual community in their lives. Meanwhile, Zach Lind interviews Shane and gives Shane the chance to clarify his definition of “community”: Shane Hipps and Zach Lind Discuss Virtual Community. from Zach Lind on Vimeo. Read more

Under Original Sin: Paul, Romans 5, and the Heart of the Issue, Emergent Pillage brings up a point that has vexed me for some time.  He (I assume EP is a “he”) baldly asserts that if you think that Paul was wrong about something, “then at least have the integrity to not call yourself a Christian.” It’ll come as no surprise, but I wouldn’t phrase it quite like that. First off, let me say, as I think the post in... Read more

Under Original Sin: Paul, Romans 5, and the Heart of the Issue, Brian provides with a helpful primer to the various views of interpreting Romans: Romans is important to the conversation about the doctrine of “Original Sin” for several reasons. First, many other people have brought it up in their comments. Second, Augustine (the person who developed “original sin”) was converted to Christianity after reading Romans. So, perhaps a wider conversation about Romans might be helpful to add to the... Read more

Thanks, Brian, for this response to Mrs. Darwin Would Be Proud: Octavia Butler has written a couple of wonderful books called The Parable of the Sower and The Parable of the Talents. In these books she includes poetry about an emerging, evolutionary theology. Here is one of these poems: All that you touch, You Change. All that you Change, Changes you. The only lasting truth Is Change. God Is Change. Read more
