I have often used the line, “I am allergic to academic guild meetings.” To that, I usually hear a response, “Yes, they’re horrible affairs.” That’s because of two reasons, I think. The first is that the brown-nosing at these events is noxious. Almost everyone, it seems, is on the prowl for a job — especially those of us who are untenured. The second reason is that the content delivered in the vast majority of sessions is regarding the most picayune... Read more
If Artists Ruled the World: If you lead people, like people, or ever wondered how to listen to your gut, join us for a conversation with Tim Keel, author of Intuitive Leadership (emersion) on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 3 at Solomon’s Porch. Tim is also an artist, a parent, the pastor of Jacob’s Well in Kansas City, and friend to many. There will be food, too! Read more
Josh Brown is, as far as I can tell, something of a 21st century version of a Renaissance man. He co-hosts a very popular podcast, takes photos, blogs, and does some excellent graphic design. It’s that last skill that I am currently most thankful for. Josh is responsible for my new banner (if you’re reading this on an RSS reader, go to my site and check it out). I think it looks great! So, if you need some web design,... Read more

That’s the question I attempted to answer to Lily (6) as we walked out of my Super Seminar, “What in the World Is the Emerging Church and What Does It Mean for Me?” at the National Youth Workers Convention. She asked because a guy named Leo from a place called Severn Church decided — after hearing me speak for about two hours — that I am outside the bounds of historic Christian orthodoxy. During the Q&A time, he raised his... Read more
Well, he continues to pump out exceptionally funny pieces that are so extraordinarily funny because that catch you unawares…in every sentence. Seriously, it’s like a machine gun of humor, every sentence more funny than the last. Read a recent piece of his in the New Yorker here. Read more
I like a lot of TV shows. Too many, really. But my current favorite has to be Frontline. Last night, I watched, “The Undertaking,” an unnarrated hour with the Lynch Funeral Home in Michigan. The stories were intense and sweet of the people who came to bury their loved ones — young and old — and those who came to plan their own funerals. And the readings by funeral director Thomas Lynch really tie the whole hour together. I spent... Read more
The next couple weekends find me in St. Louis and Spokane. This weekend, I’ll be traveling to St. Louis for the National Youth Workers Convention — I’m thinking about bringing Lily (6) since NWA is offering seats there for only 15K miles. Then, the next weekend I’ll be at a Mainline-Emergent Dialogue event in Spokane, co-hosted by the Pacific-Inland Presbytery and Whitworth College. If you live around there, or if you can score a cheap plane ticket, I want to... Read more
Last weekend was the long fall weekend in Minnesota schools — the kids had Thursday, Friday, and Monday off. Since I was asked to perform a wedding of long-time friends in Colorado, we decided to all go as a family. We spent the long weekend at the YMCA of the Rockies – Snow Mountain Ranch near Winter Park. Incredibly, it snowed a bunch while we were there. The weekend was the Family Fall festival, so it was full of fun... Read more
