I like Richard Rohr. He’s one of the good guys. And now he’s joined Twitter. Well, it seems that one of this people has joined Twitter on his behalf and has been tweeting out proverbial aphorisms. He’s only tweeted 109 times (and he only follows 3 people). Well, someone in my stream retweeted the following: When I saw this, I tweeted that I disagreed, and @truelyleb asked me to blog about my disagreement. So here goes. (more…) Read more

Last month, over 400 of us gathered in Memphis to celebrate the career (so far) of Phyllis Tickle, grande dame of American Protestantism. It was a great time. Now Phyllis and her talks at that event have been commemorated in a booklet/artifact featuring the sketches of Paul Soupiset, photographs of Courtney Perry, and appreciative quotes about Phyllis from some of her closest friends. For one week only, the book is $19.95 (plus shipping). After that, it’ll go up to $24.95.... Read more

Look, Rick Warren stopped following me on Twitter long ago. So I stopped following him right back. Nevertheless, some people I follow occasionally retweet his pithy, axiomatic Christian tweets. He seems to be a Twitter proverb generator. So, here’s something he posted recently: And now, he’s a meme. Just scroll though his tweets to see him dispensing similar advice. It’s (unintentionally) hilarious. But the meme is even funnier. See the new Twitter account @cantexplainhere here and click on Favorites for... Read more

A lot of my friends like integral philosophy. I remember years ago when evangelicals readers were scandalized because Rob Bell had a couple endnotes citing Ken Wilber in one of his books. I’ve been encouraged to read Wilber by others, like Brian McLaren and Shane Hipps. I’m not saying Brian and Shane are fanboys, I’m just saying they’ve told me I might like it. Some, however, are fanboys. Every once in a while, I’ll run into someone for whom integral... Read more

I was interested to see the above video, promoting the new book by my friends David Fitch and Geoff Holsclaw. It was particularly interesting based on how they used some terminology in the promo video. They repeatedly used the terms “neo-Reformed” and “Emergent” as opposite poles, and they used their own preferred term, “missional,” as the middle way between those two erroneous options. What was most intriguing to me is that I first met both of these guys at an... Read more

Like so many of us these days, Brianna Kocka is on the boundary of faith and doubt, Christianity and non-Christianity. She’s blogging through her thoughts and experiences. I met with her last week, and she’s sharp. You should read this post, and subscribe to her blog: So where did this break down for me? I can’t remember if it was while I was in class, or maybe I was doing some reading on Socrates. Either way, I came across his... Read more

The question this week comes from Elise, and it’s puts an even finer point on our Lenten #progGOD Challenge (there are already some great responses). When you read her question, you’ll hear traces of Calvinism in what she’s been taught, so I hope that some Calvinists will chime in. Implicit in her question are all sorts of other questions about the nature of God and the nature of justice. Here’s what Elise asks: (more…) Read more

Time to talk shop.  Last August, my literary agent and I pitched a book proposal around and, though we got some interest and even a couple offers, we felt that the time wasn’t right. We pulled the proposal and I set about to write the book in full. I also set about to get my traffic up over 100K pageviews per month. I succeeded at the latter, but not the former. The book didn’t get done, and we’re currently shopping... Read more

The Colbert Report Get More: Colbert Report Full Episodes,Political Humor & Satire Blog,Video Archive Gary Wills appeared on The Colbert Report last week, promoting his book, Why Priests?: A Failed Tradition. I agreed with everything he said, and it made me wonder, Why is he still Catholic? In fact, I wonder that a lot. I met someone recently who said she wept when Ratzinger was elected pope — wept tears of sorrow. She now hopes the next pope will be... Read more
