Is THAT Your Only Comment?

This blog has been consistently accused of and attacked for being “liberal.” Frankly, I have little uses for such labels because I am not sure exactly what they mean. I assure you that I am more liberal than the liberals, and more conservative than the conservatives depending on what the issues are. I can only speak for myself. I cannot speak for my fellow Vox-Novan contributors, but I DO know that all of us here are trying to live our faith according to the teachings of the Catholic Church, which to Catholics should be the only voice that really matters.

I will never forget how one year I was interning at an Economic Development Corporation in Anchorage and there was a gentleman there completely convinced I was a card carrying Democrat. The look on his face when he discovered I was more Republican than he was. I had actually worked on campaigns, holding street signs at sub zero temperatures trying to convince voters to vote for Candidate X. I finally told him the secret as to why he could not figure out which label to give me. I told him, “I will help you out. I am a Catholic.” The light went off and he said “OOOOHHHH!” It all became clear.

I have voted Republican in every election since turning 18. I am almost 29. Will I continue to vote Republican? That is the question. I will probably become “undeclared” and begin to vote for individual people, not parties. Will I always vote for anti-abortion politicians? I am not convinced. In my State, even though “pro-life” Republicans have the House, the Senate, and Governor’s Seat we still cannot pass a human life amendment. Furthermore, many of our “pro-life” reps are being indicted on receiving payouts from the oil companies to vote a certain way. Treating illegal immigrants? No problem. They have no rights, just like unborn children have no rights in this country. Health care for poor people? Nah. The Senior Care program was cut in my State, but don’t worry, there were plenty of benefits (like 40 years of no taxes, even though BP consistently continues to spill oil all over the State) given to the oil companies. Ugh.

Secret prisons, torture, wiretapping, all issues Republicans USED to care about when the Soviet Union did it to their citizens, now when a Republican speaks out on these issues we are called “Democrats.”

So, yes, the Republicans may very well lose my vote and they have only the Party to blame. Does this make me liberal? Well, who cares!
