One Anti-Catholic Hero of the Twentieth Century

One Anti-Catholic Hero of the Twentieth Century October 29, 2009

Jack Chick.

Sadly, his influence on Protestant Evangelicalism has been huge. And the eschatological polemic his teachings strike is very straightforward: Catholics are going to hell—and they deserve it if they don’t repent and believe in the real and pure (read: Protestant Evangelical) gospel. Tragically, for all its straightforwardness, some Catholics seem to forget the thesis of a Chick Tract (or not know of it to begin with).

Especially when it comes to politics.

During this strange time when the Stars and Stripes align Catholics and Protestant Evangelicals who seem to think that they share a common cause and political identity that comes wrapped together in an American flag, we find a group of anti-ecumenicalists practicing something like ecumenism. But it is fake. It is fake if one of them—or both, as the case may be—thinks the other one is damned to hell as a matter of religious principle. (As if the tiny little detail about the Church being the Whore of Babylon was too unimportant to get in the way of nationalism.)

No, I am not trying to poo-poo ecumenism; after all, one of the articles of faith of this unholy political alliance is that the ecumenical movement is corrupt.

What I do think is that Catholics and non-Chick Protestants (who are many!) should read through his website every so often just be reminded that this is very real.  And, perhaps, we might even think twice when they hear of the “good work” being done by Protestant Evangelicals (like Tim Tebow’s dad) who use Chick Tracts or alike.

Think I am overreacting? Take a look at this Q&A from his website.

Or, read this except from “Are Some Roman Catholics Saved?” also found at the Jim Chick website.

Just as you cannot mix fire and water, neither can one be a saved person and remain a faithful Roman Catholic… The Roman Catholics are as lost as the poor African witchdoctor or Hindu… We urge you to pray for the Roman Catholics and to witness to them as never before. They are lost and need a living Saviour, not one dead on the cross. Those who insist that there are saved Roman Catholics either do not know that Bible or do not know Roman Catholicism.

Or, even better yet, read a Chick Tract!
