Best Online Homilies, Part 2: Frederick Bauerschmidt

Best Online Homilies, Part 2: Frederick Bauerschmidt 2017-05-03T19:07:54-05:00

A few months ago, I shared my enthusiasm for Father Robert Barron and recommended his online homilies to Vox Nova readers.

Just yesterday, I was delighted to discover that Deacon Frederick Bauerschmidt also has made his homilies available online.  For those who don’t know, Deacon Bauerschmidt – also known as Dr. Bauerschmidt, Professor Bauerschmidt, or Fritz – is one of the more important Aquinas scholars working in America today.  His Holy Teaching:  Introducing the Summa Theologiae of Thomas Aquinas is must-read stuff for those interested in reading Aquinas but daunted by the length and complexity of the Summa itself.  Bauerschmidt selects key texts from Aquinas and presents them with his own commentary as footnotes so that one gets Aquinas as Aquinas, but with a helpful guide at difficult points.  Furthermore, and this is especially impressive to me, his work is applauded by scholars from all camps.

I was fortunate enough to meet Professor Bauerschmidt at a conference last spring in Baltimore, where he gave an exceptional paper.  I came home quite convinced that I want to be Fritz Bauerschmidt when (if?) I grow up.  Those interested can find Deacon Bauerschmidt’s homilies at Homiletic Diakonia.

Enjoy!

Brett Salkeld is a doctoral student in theology at Regis College in Toronto.  He is a father of two (so far) and husband of one.
