Stop Lying!

Stop Lying!

In discussions about various intrinsic evils, some people suggest that the quantity of evil has a role in defining its significance to the debate. They use the great quantity of one evil to suggest concerns about other evils are out of place. Thus, torture should not be a concern because abortion happens far more frequently. Of course, the Catholic understands all concerns are valid concerns, and one must not follow the path of the heretic to take one truth and use it to dismiss every other truth.

If this fallacious line of reasoning were valid there would be consequences to it which its promoters would not want us to follow.  There are billions of lies produced in a given day. Wouldn’t this far greater number suggest the problem of lying is of far greater concern than even abortion?  One could suggest it is not just the root problem of our age, but of every age. Lies are used to defend and promote other, secondary evils.  So, given the vast quantity of evil involved in a given day, and the fact that lying is an intrinsic evil, shouldn’t we first stop lying before we engage any other sin?
