“I don’t see how such a man [John McCain] wins the Republican nomination. I’m second to none in praising him on his surge leadership. But on a whole host of issues — including water boarding, tax cuts, and the freedom of speech — he’s not one of us.” — Kathryn Jean Lopez, NRO Editor. This is quite staggering. It now seems that a core value in this pseudo-conservative movement is support for an intrinsically evil act, a form of torture perfected... Read more

The folks at Inside Catholic were having fun showing their answers to the world’s shortest (and not entirely valuabe unless you’re a member of the liberterian cult) quiz.  I figured I would share my score with the readers.  I guess I’ll have to be content to be included with the communists and other statists.  For the record, I’m a monarchist.  Statist description from the quiz: STATISTS want government to have a great deal of power over the economy and individual behavior.... Read more

There are many reasons why one could oppose abortion, and many of them have nothing to do with any respect for life. This highly controversial video by Steve Taylor represents quite well how the two are not necessarily connected. I think it also points out the violent undertone by many who are anti-abortion but who have not entirely accepted the Gospel of Life. Read more

Here is Prof. Robert George’s open letter to Anne Rice (of vampire-novel fame), regarding her endorsement of Sen. Clinton’s campaign for the presidency (an endorsement that was, Ms. Rice stated, animated by her Catholic convictions).  A taste: . . . For now, what I hope you will consider is simply this: The child in the womb either is or is not a human being–a member of the human family. If he or she is, then he or she is entitled as... Read more

I am shocked and amazed to find Catholics claiming that John McCain has a good record on pro-life issues. These Catholics must be, no doubt, quite ignorant of political processes, for John McCain is a strong supporter of embryonic stem cell research, one of those “non-negotiables” we often hear about in Catholic circles. He has voted for every measure that seeks to provide funding and enhancement for embryonic stem cell research while a Senator for Arizona. He has joined with... Read more

There are many things one must consider when one tries to decide who they believe is the best person to lead the United State. First of all, one must consider their stated policies. What a politician says they will do matters. But we must also be concerned about how effective a leader they would be. Can they actually do what they claim they would do? It is easy to promise the world, but it is more difficult to deliver it. Promises are constantly set out during a campaign, but how quickly are they... Read more

My archbishop, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, is an amazing shepherd. He visits schools and parishes all over the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, promoting vocations, Catholic education and social ministry. He embodies what I believe the early Church understood the truest identity of the bishop to be. Cardinal DiNardo is very respected both in the United States and at the Vatican, and he was the only actively presiding bishop in the United States to be elevated to cardinal in the last Concistoro per... Read more

Our discussion yesterday brought forth a few interesting matters.  One of the matters was on the difference between venial and mortal sin.  While being educated about what extenuating circumstances are and being educated about intention – this is more along the lines of miseducation unfortunately – is a good thing, there was a tendency when I was growing up to move the discernment to oneself rather than to the confessional.  The logic was that even in cases of grave matter, the matter... Read more
