In a recent post of mine, Morning’s Minion offered the following comment: I’m afraid Alex, well intentioned as he is, simply does not understand what proximity to the evil act means. Voting for a politician who supports abortion when you clearly do not share that intention, and when that politician’s influence on the actual incidence of abortion is strictly limited, is perfectly licit. The non-negotiability applies to the specfic act of directly-procured abortion itself, and formal cooperation with it, Especially... Read more

I just watched the movie, Molokai: The Story of Father Damien. Absolutely fabulous, wonderful, heartwarming, gut wrenching. Wow! You see how God uses Fr.Damien’s humiliations, weaknesses, injustices against him, to further help the forgotten suffers of Hansen’s Disease (leprosy) during the 1800s in Hawaii. At that time, all people with the Disease were exiled to an island where they were forgotten by families and their government. The Catholic Bishop wanted to serve the people by providing their spiritual needs so... Read more

The detractors have already begun their grandstanding. But for a moment, let us at least recognize that the efforts of Al Gore and the IPCC to inform the world of the threat of the human impact on climate change have as their end the restoration of responsible stewardship of the earth. And with responsible stewardship comes peace. While there may well have been more deserving candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize, I am satisfied with the result. (more…) Read more

I am no fan of Ann Coulter. I find her style to be abrasive and often hateful. I disagree with many of her positions. However, I do not think it is just to make things up about her, or take what she says out of context and use it to misrepresent her beliefs. (more…) Read more

Let’s start from a basic premise. I believe in social insurance, the idea of a large risk pool whereby the young and the healthy subsidize the old and the ill, on the understanding that they themselves will be taken care of in their time of need. It’s efficient, as risk is spread among a large group. It’s also equitable and accords well with the Catholic principle of solidarity, of a community that looks after its own. I do not believe... Read more

From the School of the Americas Watch email list: We are very excited to announce that President Evo Morales announced Tuesday that Bolivia will gradually withdraw its military from the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC), formerly known as the School for the Americas (SOA). Bolivia is now the fifth country after Costa Rica, Argentina, Uruguay and Venezuela to formally announce a withdrawal from the school! “We will gradually withdraw until there are no Bolivian officers attending the School... Read more

Yet another excellent post by my good friend, Joe Carter, over at the Evangelical Outpost. Here’s a taste: I am a political realist . . . Because I’m a political realist, I also believe that in the long run electing Rudy Giuliani will be even more detrimental to the pro-life cause than would a Hillary Clinton presidency . . . . Giuliani supports abortion on demand, including partial birth abortion. He supports public funding of both abortion and embryo destructive... Read more

Dr. Patrick Deneen of Georgetown offers what I can best describe as my own intuition on the Presidential contest in a post called “None of the Above“.  Excerpting briefly: (more…) Read more

Hans Urs von Balthasar noted several times that true, demonic evil can only be understood in relation to the Incarnation of the Word of God. Before the light of Christ, demonic influences upon humanity, while it existed, was not properly understood; they lived in the darkness, and they were able to cover themselves and hide themselves from our vision, because the radiant light of Christ had yet to bring them out into the open. This explains, he suggested, why it... Read more
