Univision, the nation’s largest Spanish language network, aired yesterday a presidential debate with the candidates from the Democratic party. As many would expect, immigration is the top issue for the Hispanic population when considering presidential candidates and so it was at the debate. I was unable to watch the debate, although I know the Democrats’ positions on those issues that concern Hispanics for the most part, so I’m sure I wasn’t going to be surprised. Although I read that one... Read more

From Pope Benedict: “Above all, however, we must confirm that this Enlightenment philosophy, with its related culture, is incomplete. It conspicuously cuts off its own historical roots, depriving itself of the powerful sources from which it sprang. It detaches itself from what we might call the basic memory of mankind, without which reason loses its orientation, for now the guiding principle is that man’s capability determines what he does. If you know how to do something, then you are also... Read more

It has been well observed that we should wage war not against the natural world, which has been created  by God, but against those movements and energies of the essential powers within us which are disordered and unnatural and hostile to the natural world.  — St Maximus the Confessor The Artic: Mirror of Life demonstrates how religious leaders can come together and work for the common good. Whenever I talk about disaster that is the war in Iraq, I am often accused of being motivated entirely by Bush hatred. So blind I am, so the argument goes, that I play down the significance of groups like Al Qaeda, since they are “just fighting horrible America”. When I point out that hardly any of the Sunni insurgents in Iraq are members of Al Qaeda, suddenly I am indifferent to the suffering brought about by these murderers. Let me... Read more

Recently, Michael Iafrate wrote an interesting and important post about the environmental concerns which face the Appalachian people. Among the issues he raised was the way mountains were being blown up as a quick method for coal mining, the ease of restrictions being put in place to allow even more of this kind of mining, and the consequences this would have. In Canada similar concerns are being raised upon the whole of their mining industry. The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development... Read more

An Unreasonable Man is a documentary about Ralph Nader. If you are like me, the first thoughts that will cross your mind upon hearing that name are notions like thoughtless, selfish, egotistical, narcissistic, megalomaniac. But we need to step back from recent electoral politics and look at the big picture. In this sense, this movie is illuminating. For nobody can deny that Ralph Nader’s contribution to the public good over the last four decades is nothing short of remarkable. Nader... Read more

Reuters has this report: Pope Benedict rejected the concept that abortion could be considered a human right on Friday and urged European leaders to do everything possible to raise birth rates and make their countries more child-friendly . . . . “It was in Europe that the notion of human rights was first formulated. The fundamental human right, the presupposition of every other right, is the right to life itself,” he said in an address at the former imperial Hofburg... Read more

Incredibly enough, this may be the first case in history in which the downtrodden manage to bring down an unfair economic system without going to the trouble of a revolution.First they stopped paying their mortgages, a move in which they were joined by many financially stretched middle class folks, though the poor definitely led the way. All right, these were trick mortgages, many of them designed to be unaffordable within two years of signing the contract. There were “NINJA” loans,... Read more
