The recent post by Soutenus got me thinking. I was going to reply in the combox, but the response was growing too long. Basically, I think there’s far to much confusion (and obsession) surrounding homosexuality in political and religious circles today. We need to step back and apply some reason. Let’s go back to basics. First, the church condemns homosexual acts, not homosexuality itself. That distinction is essential. No Catholic teaching supports those fundamentalist crazies who try to turn gay... Read more

In a nutshell:This post is about”Coming Out” from under the influence of the homosexual mindset. A prominent U.S. gay activist, Michael Glatze is now publicly speaking out against homosexuality. He is actively encouraging others to leave a way of life that he says “is by its very nature pornographic”An article by John JalsevacJuly 3, 2007; LifeSiteNews.com Michael Glatze, once a rising star in the homosexual movement, having become the editor of the popular Young Gay America magazine in his early... Read more

One of my favorite poems: Let America Be America Again, by Langston Hughes. Let America be America again.Let it be the dream it used to be.Let it be the pioneer on the plainSeeking a home where he himself is free.(America never was America to me.)Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed–Let it be that great strong land of loveWhere never kings connive nor tyrants schemeThat any man be crushed by one above.(It never was America to me.)O, let my... Read more

If so, what explains this pagan ethic? Robert Bork, Ronald Reagan’s one-time nominee to the Supreme Court, mumbles from beneath low-hanging jowls: “The coverage of this war is unbelievable. Even Fox News is unbelievable. You’d think we’re the only ones dying. Enemy casualties aren’t covered. We’re doing an excellent job killing them.” Read more

As I mentioned previously, I take patriotism to be a virtue that is opposed to any sort of idolatrous nationalism that exalts one’s nation above all others. I think a robust patriotism appreciates national patrimony but also includes maintaining a critical perspective of national history. I also think that U.S. holidays designated to celebrate, among other things, wars can be properly or improperly commemorated depending on how sober one’s look at history is. That said, I re-present a video I... Read more

How about some Fourth of July conspiracy fun? Ever been to Washington, D.C.? It’s an interesting microcosm of America. A capital city that is well ordered and remarkably clean in its center, yet is surrounded by embarrassing economic and social poverty. A city whose citizens are well taxed, but are without political representation in federal government. No shortage of affluent and predominantly white neighborhoods lie on the circumference of the city, extending into Virginia and Maryland. This is my nation’s... Read more

To further the reputation of this blog of having unique commentary around national holidays, I will offer the Declaration of Independence. For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies This was cited as one of the offenses against the colonists. What this refers to is the... Read more

Anna Nussbaum at the Commonweal blog poses a question to her readers that I have been thinking and writing about for a while now: whether patriotic songs should be sung at Mass. Anyone who has been reading my blog or my contributions to Vox Nova knows my thoughts on the matter, but I did weigh in over in the post’s combox. I would say that there is a good discussion going on there, but surprisingly, most of the readers offering... Read more
