A few nights ago I attended a reading by a new novelist.  She is gorgeous, and her book has taken the publishing world by storm.  Her husband was there, along with her children, and she told us–eloquently, with a great deal of humor and grace (while wearing the most beautiful cashmere cardigan)–how she came to write her book. I ran across an old Christmas letter today and I remember the situation like it was yesterday. We are Christmas shopping and my son, Samuel is sitting in the buggy of the cart. Being a woman used to be defined as “bringing home the bacon and frying it up in a pan.”  (Not to mention the part about not ever letting our husband forget he’s a man.)  Perhaps the more modern definition of womanhood might replace frying up the bacon in a pan with choosing whole, fresh, natural, organic, local, seasonal, unrefined and unprocessed foods to serve to your family before homework and a reasonable bedtime.
