When the Mountain Feels Bigger than your Faith

When the Mountain Feels Bigger than your Faith

It’s easy to have faith when things in life are going smoothly. But, what about in those situations that shake you to your core? How do you hold onto your faith and trust that God is good, when things in your life feel anything but?

I’m currently in a season of life where I’m facing a scary reality that I can’t come to terms with, as hard as I try.

Anger is a feeling I’m not super familiar with, and honestly, it makes me uncomfortable. Yet, I’ve felt it so much over the last several weeks. The situation feels completely unfair and out of my control. I wrestle with my fears daily, and try to reconcile a heartbreaking potential outcome with God’s goodness.

When Keeping Faith is Easier Said Than Done

My life is based around my faith, and yet, it still feels fragile.

I know God is good, but I can’t see his goodness in this.

He is sovereign, and I trust he has a plan, but I wish he could take a different route to get there.

What do you do when you want to trust God with your future, but your fears are taking control?

Keep Communication Open

Be honest with yourself and with God. You don’t have to pretend everything is fine. It may mean crying out to him and saying things like,

“I’m so angry right now, but I don’t want to be – please give me your peace.”

“I want to trust you Lord, but this is so scary and I’m having a hard time seeing you in it – increase my faith.”

God can handle whatever we throw his way: our anger, doubts, questions, tears. He’s there beside us to walk this road with us.

The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Exodus 14:14, NIV)

Worship in Faith Anyway

Faith is not based on feelings. Keep reading your Bible daily. Go to church. Sing worship songs – even if the words coming from your mouth feel half-hearted, and it’s a fight to get them out. Sing it ’til you believe it.

You have to trust that God has not abandoned you. The worst thing you can do during a difficult time is walk away from Him. Lean into Him instead.

Continue to spend time with God and with other believers. Don’t seclude yourself or shut down. Keep worshiping Him and talking to Him.

“I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” (Psalm 34:1, KJV)

Look for the Little Things

God truly cares for you and he can see when your heart is breaking. He has a way of providing little details throughout the day to remind you of His presence.

Maybe it’s the sound of birds in the early morning hours, the breathtaking sunset as the day comes to a close, sweet giggles from your children as they play… little moments of joy and beauty that, for a moment, make you feel like everything’s going to be okay. Hold onto those.

God’s got you!

“From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” (Psalm 61:2, KJV)
