Here’s an old chestnut. Thanks are in order to my mom for first introducing me to it: Read more

I featured Marc Cohn on this site last year in an entry for my Poetry in Song series, highlighting the ballad “Silver Thunderbird.” I claimed that Cohn was an underrated writer, who is justly famous for his smash hit “Walking in Memphis” but deserves more recognition for his other work. Since then I’ve listened to even more of his songs and am more convinced than ever that I was right. Most recently, I embedded his song “Old Soldier” at the... Read more

Here’s a taste of what you can expect from a Perrys concert with its current lineup. “Royal Descendant”: “Blue Skies”: Read more

This surprised me somewhat (in a very pleasant way)! Steven Curtis Chapman is set to release a new 12-song project called Deep Roots to various outlets a week from now, including everyone’s favorite country store, Cracker Barrel. Just over half of it will contain fresh recordings of old hymns and gospel songs (including “He Touched Me”), and the other section will contain new versions of some of his own classics. Many songs are collaborations with family members, and one of... Read more

Hat tip, Challies. He said he’s watched this 20 times and still laughs. I have now been reduced to tears by it several times. May it touch your heart in the same way: Read more

So the other day I got this newsletter from Legacy Five with the subject header “L5’s New Band.” My heart leaped. Was it possible? Could Legacy Five have made the daring move to acquire a band of musicians? But no. They tricked me. Not cool, Legacy Five: Read more

We’re back with another installment in “Recently Added,” and today’s featured artist is Phil Collins (whose work I’ve spotlighted here before in a “Questions and Answers” entry). Collins is, in my opinion, one of the best singer/songwriters in pop music, but critics by and large don’t seem to agree. However, he has enjoyed great popular success, both as front-man for the 80s lineup of the British band Genesis and as a solo artist into the 90s. A master drummer, he wrote with... Read more

Oscars night has come and gone, and the nominees for Best Picture were, from a family perspective, relatively slim pickings. Most of them ranged from spiritually muddled at best (Life of Pi, Beasts of the Southern Wild) to profane, violent and/or morally offensive at worst (roughly half the nominees). The picture which came out on top in the end, historical hostage thriller Argo, was actually one of the better choices. I agree with Focus on the Family’s Plugged In (whose... Read more

There have been too many updates on Tracy Stuffle’s stroke for me to keep up with them all. I continue to point readers to the Caring Bridge website, where fresh news is posted daily. Things took a turn for the worse just recently when the drainage catheter stopped functioning, but the newest replacement now seems to be doing the job. It’s been heartening to read about the outpouring of aid for the Perrys during this time (Lauren at View From... Read more
