The other day I was blessed to find and watch this video about a non-profit organization called Casey’s Cookies. Ernie Haase & Signature Sound recently paid a visit and put up this clip on their facebook page, which included footage of them hanging out with Casey and singing her favorite song with her at a concert — “He Touched Me”: I’m not ashamed to say that once I had watched it a couple times, the tear glands were kicking in... Read more

A while back, I acquired the vintage Cathedrals album Prestigious Cathedral Quartet. It’s probably best-known for containing Danny Funderburk’s sugar stick “Somebody Touched Me” and the oft-covered “An Old Convention Song.” Other highlights include a sweet Roger Bennett song (“When the World Looks At Me”), and a subtly haunting closing number called “Next Time We Meet.” But there was one song on the album that immediately caught my ear, because when I first heard it I had the nagging feeling... Read more

Some time ago, I came across a piece by respected Christian songwriter Joel Lindsey about songwriting. He talked about the experience of teaching a seminar where people brought their ideas for honest feedback. But at the end of the day, only one had really stuck with him: As I lie here in bed thinking back over all the songs I heard today, I can only really remember one song.  It was a trainwreck of a song that needs probably more... Read more

Uh-oh. I think I may be about to ruffle some feathers with this one. Should be fun. Let’s do it. First of all, I should say that if you’re out there, and you’re reading this, and you think Rob Bell is the greatest thing since sliced bread…I am in no way trying to say that you are an evil person who deserves to rot in hell. (Although come to think of it, we’re all evil people who deserve to rot... Read more

Four years ago today, gospel music lost one of its greatest pianists. But it also lost a great soldier and hero of the faith. Although he was very ill with cancer for a good part of his life, Roger somehow kept his smile, his humor, and his courage about him. He was an inspiration to many, and his life still continues to touch other lives, including mine. It has “become the light that leads us to the road we each... Read more

If you can’t remember your own melody by tomorrow, it probably wasn’t that great of a melody to begin with. Read more

Just to clarify so no rumors get started, this is ONLY an IDEA. I have no information to the effect that Wayne Haun is planning to make a solo album in the near future. This is all coming out of my head. Okay, now that we’ve established that, I was musing on this the other day when I found a 2-year-old online streaming episode of Ann Downing’s Reality Check with Wayne Haun as the guest. My favorite parts were when... Read more

Some voices are what you might call cookie-cutter voices—if you’ve heard one, you’ve heard them all. Not George Younce. You could peg that voice a mile off. Why? Because even when George wasn’t talking to you, he was talking to you. His voice was like that of an old friend—warm and welcoming. In the words of Statler Brothers bass Harold Reid, “It said hello to you.” And once you heard it, you never forgot it. This project features ten of... Read more

“Tolerance today means that you believe something different from what I believe, and we can both be right. Isn’t that amazing? We can both be right!” *** I think I’ll call this “Surprise Sunday.” On Sunday, if I choose to post at all, anything can happen. You might drop by to find a powerful scene from a classic film (see last week), a funny Youtube video, a devotional thought, thoughts on the culture, or perhaps a bit of great music... Read more

As promised, here is my review of Signature Sound’s March 5th concert in Grand Rapids, MI. Below is a slideshow of images from beginning to end of the concert. Feel free to browse through, pick out your favorites, and tell me about them! [slideshow] The show took a little while to get started, but they had a special deal going at the beginning where they put together Stand By Me Live CD/DVD, Great Love, self-titled, and the new George Younce... Read more
