Science is all kinds of popular right now. From Neil deGrasse Tyson’s revamped Cosmos to PBS’s Your Inner Fish which features one of those transitional species that creationists claim don’t (and can’t) exist, it’s been a rough few weeks for Ken Ham and his merry band of fundamentalists. His epic showdown with Bill Nye is but a distant memory and his beloved Noah’s ark finally made it to the big screen…just not quite in the way he imagined. But fear... Read more

I freely admit that I have not listened to the sermons in this sermon series. So, maybe the commercial and the website description are both wildly inaccurate or at least tongue in cheek. It just really, really doesn’t seem like that. With sermon titles like “One Nation Under God,” “Indivisible,” “Liberty,” and “Justice For All” it really, really sounds like Christian America: The Winning Soldier has the makings of the most shameless mix of faith and patriotism ever in the history... Read more

(H/T) Ok, so technically I didn’t do a podcast with the entire country of Peru. I tried, but there were too many schedule conflicts to make it happen. I did, however, sit down for a podcast with my new friend and missionary in Peru, Steve Bremner. Since 2009, Steve has been a missionary to Peru, where he is involved in teaching and training disciples in a missional community called Oikos. He and his wife Lili share a vision to help... Read more

(H/T) It goes without saying that we disagree on a lot things in the Church. If there’s something to believe in or a position to take – maybe it’s gay marriage or abortion or war or women in ministry or speaking in tongues or – it’s pretty easy to find 2 people who passionately disagree. But there is one thing that usually unites us even in our passionate disagreement. We all think we’re biblical in the things we say and... Read more

David Barton is still at it. If you’re not familiar with him, he’s a well known pseudo-historian who famously had his book The Jefferson Lies pulled off the shelves by his publisher because it was revealed that – like most of everything else claims about the founding fathers – “basic truths just were not there.” That hasn’t stopped Barton from barnstorming across the country with revisionist history of America. And because he frequently uses the word “Bible” and “Constitution” in... Read more

Church plays (or musicals) can be a goldmine for hilariousness and poking fun. Like the time when a church tried to use pyrotechnics in their passion play and Jesus was almost roasted alive. We put on so many plays and musicals at church about the same story that getting butts in the pews means doing something to stand out from the crowd. Which often results in disaster…and a few good laughs. But this play seems different. And I share it,... Read more

(H/T) In the wake of the epic World Vision fiasco last week I wrote a post calling for the abandonment of evangelicalism in favor of “new wineskins.” That call wasn’t an impulsive reaction. It was the continuation of something I began talking about two years ago and others began calling for many years before that. Last week’s disaster only reinforced my conviction that evangelicalism is a culture/mindset/structure that needs to be left on the ash heap of history. I am... Read more

(H/T Matthew Paul Turner) Yesterday afternoon I participated in a conference call with World Vision president Rich Stearns. It lasted a little less than an hour and consisted mostly of Rich explaining and apologizing for everything that has taken since (and before) World Vision changed and then reversed their decision to hire employees who are married and gay. While the original decision may have seemed like a publicity stunt, it was not. World Vision had no intention of trying to... Read more

(painting by unknown artist) They say confession is good for the soul. And I hear laughing at yourself can do wonders too. So, in that spirit I invite you to do a little of both with me today. I have a confession to make. Not long ago I found myself momentarily overwhelmed by nostalgia, headed over to iTunes, and repurchased the first album I ever owned. What was that album, you ask? Steven Curtis Chapman’s Heaven In The Real World.... Read more

Christians are notorious for putting up some pretty controversial church signs and billboards. Turns out we’re not the only ones. A serious of billboards has gone up in Columbus, OH and is causing quite the stir. Mostly because of this sign. I guess I appreciate the “Jesus is…” language, and maybe I’m being picky here, but I’m having a hard time wrapping my mind around how Jesus could be an adherent to a religion founded nearly 600 years after he... Read more
