Today begins a new chapter in my life. In just a couple of hours I will head down to New Haven for orientation at Yale Divinity School. I haven’t been in school for a few years now, but I think my excitement, at least at this point, is winning out over my anxiety about getting back into the swing of going to classes, writing papers, and taking tests. Classes actually start next Wednesday, so we’ll see if my... Read more

If you love Jesus and Elvis and you’re tired of having to choose between the two, then this might just be the auction for you. That is, if you’ve got an extra $30,000 or so laying around.   Elvis Bible up for auction by Michael Gryboski, The Christian Post  As Thursday marked the 35th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death, a Bible that once belonged to the famous singer will be for sale next month along with other... Read more

It’s election season again. I know because my Facebook page has gone from the occasional political post to a non-stop stream of sarcastic pictures, rants, and links “proving” that the other side is the incarnation of evil. I don’t begrudge anyone the right to share their political opinions on Facebook or elsewhere, especially since I can ignore it with a simple click of the mouse. Thank you for that Mark Zuckerburg. I also don’t begrudge who other people... Read more

I’ve heard of several churches that hold services in bars, even one that held services in a strip club. Seriously. But in just about every one of those cases the bar was closed or at least was not serving alcohol. Apparently, the tap flows freely at this church on the Florida-Alabama state line. I don’t have an issue with unholy places being repurposed as holy space. For me, it echoes the time when Paul held church in a... Read more

Let this be a lesson to any church out there thinking about hosting their own fireworks show. It’s probably not the best idea you’ve ever had. Just watch this video and you’ll see why. Unfortunately, 28 people were injured in the accident. You can go here to read more about the fireworks show gone wrong.   Read more

So, um, yeah. I don’t even know what to say. I guess this is Tebow’s way of sharing Jesus with ladies that like to see him with his shirt off?                    (via) Tim Tebow Graces Cover Of GQ, Creates Stir Over Old Photo CBSNewYork NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The NFL Kickoff issue of GQ magazine has hit newsstands in New York City, and guess who’s on the cover. Hint: he’s not even... Read more

Sunday morning sermons, Bible studies, personal devotions, they’re all a waste of time. Why? Because these sorts of activities try to teach us about the peculiar sort of life Jesus called his followers to live. While that may sound like a good and important endeavor, it’s really a waste of time because the truth is Jesus was wrong about a lot of things he said. Jesus said you can’t serve two masters, but we know that life must be... Read more

There’s a spiritual battle being waged all around us, but with music and dance moves like this, I think we can safely say the battle has already been won. Read more

The particular words we choose to use have meaning and that meaning matters. A few weeks ago I tried to highlight this issue in a post about the go to evangelism pitch “Jesus loves you just the way you are”. As I said in that post, we toss that phrase around without really thinking through what those words actually, or perhaps I should say literally, mean. Well, there’s another classic evangelism pitch that I want to examine, one... Read more
