Fish Tacos Recipe
“The Sneaky Version”
Step 1: Without telling your children, program a new passcode into their video game console, computer, or iPhone. Wait approximately 15 minutes. When you hear your children yell, “Mom! Dad! My game isn’t working!” give them an I-share-your-concern look, look confusingly at the screen for a moment, and then offer to take them fishing.
Step 2: Bring home 3-4 fresh fish and, without revealing the passcode, or that you actually know the passcode because you changed it, invite your children to work out their frustration by helping you fillet and clean the fish. “It’ll be fun… come on,” often works. But not always.
Step 3: In a medium bowl, mix together the panko, salt, pepper, chili powder, and your favorite fish seasoning.
Step 4: With a fork or egg beater, mix the eggs and milk into a small bowl. One at a time, let the fish swim in the mixture before breading each fillet with the blend from Step 3.
Step 5: Pour oil into a frying pan and place over a medium heat until the oil begins to smoke. (Important note: your kids are likely going through video game withdrawals by now, and their judgment may be impaired. To remove the risk of a possible impulsive, irrational decision to grab the handle of the pan like it’s a Wii controller, place the handle toward the back of the stove.)
Step 7: Toss out the suggestion to your children that slicing vegetables is virtually the same thing as stacking blocks in Minecraft or saving the earth on Lego Marvel Super Heroes. If they bite, and that’s not entirely likely, have them slice and dice the lettuce, cilantro, onion, radishes, and lime, placing all the fresh ingredients “adventurously” on a serving plate.
Step 8: Serve fish with tortillas, fresh ingredients, mayo, and your favorite salsa or hot sauce.
Step 9: While your kids are piling fresh ingredients into their tacos and talking about how fishing was the perfect way to spend the day if they couldn’t be clearing another level in Angry Birds, slip into the other room, re-program the passcode back to the original, and sit back and wait. At some point, probably within the hour, you’ll hear something like, “Mom! Dad! You’ll never believe it… our game is working! What a great day!”

- 6-8 fish fillets (walleye, crappie, or perch are the best!)
- 2 eggs, beaten
- ¼ cup of milk
- 1 sweet Vidalia onion, sliced
- ½-dozen radishes, diced
- 1 cup cilantro, shredded
- 2 cups lettuce, shredded
- ¼-cup mayonnaise
- 2-3 limes, quartered
- 1 cup of panko (or bread crumbs or flour)
- ½-cup of canola oil (or coconut)
- 10 corn or flour tortillas
- Salt (to taste)
- Pepper (to taste)
- Chili powder (to taste)
- 1-2 TBS of your favorite fish seasoning (I like Penzey’s Greek Seasoning, or Tony Chachere’s CREOLE Seasoning)
