The Church is Missional or the Church is God’s Mission?

The Church is Missional or the Church is God’s Mission? June 12, 2012

This blog has become a place for me to flesh out something of a transition that has been happening in my understanding of ‘missional’ over the last year or so.

I’m sure there’s a ton of repetition in the posts under the ‘missional church’ category, and probably some contradiction, too. There is, no doubt, evolution. But in the very least, I feel like the Lord is bringing me to a more spiritually mature (not in a cocky way) grasp on how missional can be a true, deep, and lasting paradigm shift for the church rather than another formal, structural, strategic, shallow fad (a’la seeker church).

And part of the key in this, I think, is simply that missional can never, ever trump the centrality of the church.

So let this be a brief, if clarifying, addition to my own stream of consciousness housed on this site: We must leave behind the faddish notion of making the church more missional (through strategies and structures) and return to the deeply spiritual notion that THE CHURCH IS GOD’S MISSION.

Bosch already said it, of course, but we are just too quick to forget it.
