The simplicity of Amish culture is reflected in its worship services. You won’t find incense, altars, candles, organs, stained glass windows, choirs, or pulpits. The Amish do not worship in a church. Instead, religious services rotate among homes of community members on Sundays throughout the year. Communion services are held in the fall and spring and set the tone for the religious year—emphasizing self-examination and spiritual rejuvenation. During the 8-hour Communion service, the Amish confess their sins, reaffirm their vow to uphold Ordnung, and participate in foot washing, singing, and an alms offering to the deacon.
