As Anabaptists, adult baptism is the cornerstone of the Amish faith. Acceptance of the baptismal vow, which usually occurs between the ages of 18 and 22, is a commitment to follow Jesus and the community’s Ordnung for life. Rumspringa, which translates as "running around" is a coming-of-age process for youth starting at age 16. They experience greater freedom from parents, experience the outside world, socialize, and begin dating. Eventually, they must decide if they wish to be baptized. Breaking of baptismal vows or disobeying the regulations of the church or the authority of its leaders are grounds for shunning. However, excommunicated members who show sincere remorse are welcomed back.
