Parshat Shelach Lecha: Numbers 13:1 - 15:41

What feels most poignant about this parsha is our delay in entering Canaan or Israel and the current situation in modern-day Israel and Palestine. There is fighting between Palestinians and Israelites over who owns what. There is fighting among the Jewish people over what side is right. While we can never forget our past, Hashem made us wait a generation to enter Canaan because we were too afraid of the past and we didn't have enough trust that the situation could be worked out.

Perhaps some people will use this to say we, the Jewish people, should never have entered Israel in the first place and we have no claim on the land, but hopefully there is a new generation, one in which the fears aren't insurmountable. We look toward Israel with hope and promise, where we can find peace with our neighbors and stop calling on the past as reason to ruin the future. But one side alone cannot do this. There has to be cooperation between both groups with the same intention, living as cousins in a sacred space.

Perhaps now it is time for the next generation of Palestinians and Israelites to find a true and lasting peace.
