Hellenismos and the Future of Paganism: An Interview with Rebecca Buchanan

The Scribing Ibis will also feature a few nonfiction essays about Pagan literature, ancient and modern. If you have such an essay in mind, ping me!

Ah, sadly I don't write fiction but I hope that some of our readers will be inspired to contribute something. It sounds like a fascinating project. Moving on, what resources would you suggest for someone just coming into Hellenismos, or for someone curious about the faith?

Most people immediately suggest the book Old Stones, New Temples. But, honestly, it's very hard to find and it's very bare bones. Instead, I suggest Kharis: Hellenic Polytheism Explored by Sarah Kate Istra Winter. And, of course, everything published by Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Thista Minai also produced Dancing In Moonlight: Understanding Artemis through Celebration. Hymns from the Temple: A Hellenic Book of Prayer by Lykeia contains a lot of wonderful poems (the latter two are published through Asphodel Press). A World Full of Gods: An Inquiry into Polytheism by John Michael Greer is another definite must-have.

If you're looking for books about mythology and Hellenismos by non-Hellenistai, then look for anything by Karl Kerenyi, Jennifer Larson, Ross Shepard Kraemer, Ginette Paris, and Sarah Iles Johnston. Padraic Colum and Ann Turnbull both have terrific children's books available.

H. Jeremiah Lewis (aka Sannion) also has several great books out on Greco-Egyptian polytheism: The Balance of the Two Lands and Echoes of Alexandria.

Thank you so much, Rebecca, for taking the time to be interviewed. Good luck in your upcoming projects.
