Crossed Wires – A Dog’s Purpose and Lady Gaga

Crossed Wires – A Dog’s Purpose and Lady Gaga February 6, 2017

girls' weekendI was taught in early elementary that assumptions caused drama. Instead, research and look at all the facts or else making said assumptions could make a donkey out of you.

Our world is different from 40 years ago, though. Almost everybody has access to give an opinion, share information as it happens, and a means to broadcast it. Progression is interesting, though, we sometimes believe past lessons are outdated.

A couple weeks back TMZ aired a video taken of a very frightened dog filming the movie A Dog’s Purpose.  I loved the book and was excited to see the film, but when the video came out I had a client see that I posted on the movie weeks back and asked me if I was boycotting the film.

“I just don’t know if I have all the facts,” I told her.

“Facts?” she laughed. “Did you see the video? Being an animal lover I’m surprised you’d go see this, Kristy!”

“Is TMZ really news?” I questioned.

“But there’s a video. No disputing a video.”

I wanted to see more of that video, though, in order to form an opinion. It seemed more people sided with my client. Almost immediately, even before the movie was out in the theaters, people began a boycott campaign and reviewing the movie at 1 or 2 stars, without even seeing it purely based on TMZ information.

Today I opened up my laptop to read that after an investigation on the video that showed a German shepherd in distress on the set, that it was found the video was ‘deliberately edited for the purpose of misleading the public’.

So what is the truth? What’s it really matter at this point? Damage has already been done. In this new world we live in it seems that you are guilty before being proven innocent.

Lady Gaga was chosen to be the half time show act for the Super Bowl. As I perused social media yesterday morning I saw petitions circulating to ban the half time show with comments that spouted:

“She’s going to make a political statement.”

“She flew in a bunch of Muslims”.

“She called Beyonce and asked her how she could make it the most controversial.”

“I don’t want my football game to get political.”

At her news conference beforehand she promised a statement of “inclusion” and assumptions were made. Instead what we received was an upbeat and uncontroversial show. Sure, she sang a few lines from “God Bless America” and “This Land Is Your Land” and recited the “one nation indivisible” from the Pledge of Allegiance. She also shouted out a hi to her mom and dad. It was that controversial. Although people will read into everything, she offered several minutes of entertainment, with hints of a political statement. Most all of it was just refreshing, whether you like her or not.  She had the last mic drop.

I wonder if those who report assumptions, and those who believe and spread the rumors, are embarrassed at all. Remember that old game telephone, sometimes called whisper? The teacher would whisper a message in the ear of a student, that student would then whisper to the next, and it went through the whole group until the last person would finally announce the message to the entire group. Although the objective is to pass around the message without it being misheard and altered along the way, part of the enjoyment and fun is the errors in the retell.  The reasons for the difference could be anxiety, stress, hearing issues, and sometimes plain deceit. We are living in a world of whispers, only they are being shouted, shared and believed.

In our world with so much content it’s harder to research, to get all the facts, but that doesn’t mean you have to assume or play the game of whispers. Maybe the truth is harder than what is real. Or maybe drama wins.
