BBC: US ‘settles 9/11 detainee’s suit’

Uncle Sam is settling a lawsuit filed by a wrongfully detained Egyptian national.  It’s an encouraging development, and hopefully a sign that a modicum of sanity and due process may be returning to the American legal system where Muslims are concerned.

Given how the Bush Administration has unapologetically ridden roughshod over civil rights and due process, one suspects that this case was particularly egregious.

This shouldn’t come from your or my pockets as taxpayers, though.  At least part of this settlement come out of the salaries of those responsible, i.e., the grossly negligent government officials and shadowy , unaccountable bureaucrats who made this happen and who knowingly continued to violate this man’s rights.

As a citizen and a taxpayer, I want to know who’s responsible and how they’re being held accountable.

The US government has agreed to pay $300,000 (£172,000) to settle a lawsuit brought by an Egyptian arrested after the 11 September attacks, reports say.

Ehab Elmaghraby was detained for nearly a year and deported after being cleared of links to terrorism.
